Can't do that - would be inappropriate. Does your school not have a copy you can borrow or look at?

Oh. I don't know I'm 1,000 miles away from my university. I guess I'll go to a library. Thanks.

That data is a year old, plus it makes the assumption that you can add up median MCAT scores to get a cumulative median, which is definitely incorrect.

Can you explain what you mean by that? An example would be good because I have heard somthing like that before but don't really understand what you mean.

It's fine, he's only looking for GPA. These data are the best you're going to get if you don't want to purchase an MSAR.

You can also get very comprehensive data from US News Best Graduate Schools. I think it costs $15 to subscribe

The following explanation doesn't apply to that website because they do use averages. However, the averages are from a smaller group of accepted students who choose to submit their stats, so it isn't exactly representative.

Here's an example of total median and mean and composite median and mean anyway.

Medical school stat books use the median instead of the mean because it better accounts for skewed averages that might result from very high scores or very low scores.

For a set of MCAT scores [30, 30, 45, 32, 28], the median is 30 while the mean is 33.

Now if you break down those scores to the composite scores for each section:

PS VR BS
Score 1: 10 10 10
Score 2: 8 12 10
Score 3: 15 15 15
Score 4: 9 13 10
Score 5: 12 8 8

Median: 10 12 10
Mean: 10.8 11.6 10.6

If you add up the composite median scores, than you get 32 instead of the actual composite median score of 30. However, you can add composite scores for the mean and still get the same mean as the composite mean.

I just looked it up on US News. From what I saw, there are only 6 Allopathic schools with a GPA equal to or less than 3.50.

and those schools would be....?

Most likely so low due to strict selection of in state applicants lowering the competitiveness of the applicant pool.

according to medical school ready.com, Crieghton has a median GPA of 3.79....seems a little high, considering crieghton is not top tier or high mid tier. Compared to the schools around that GPA is doesn't have any awards or rankings.

You know, I bought the MSAR thinking it would be the "bible" of med schools..but I was kinda dissappointed with it. It didn't really provide breakdowns like I would have liked...I mean averages are nice, but I want standard deviations and ranges for that school...but it still helped.

Like med schools want to give insight on this process. Heck, there is only one school that I know of (UTSW) that gives more info on their website than they do in the MSAR. Total breakdowns of mean composite score. Percents of each ethnicity. GPA and MCAT ranges. Even a brief look at which colleges their students come from.

Schools are purposely shady about this info. Either that or they don't have a clue on how to make a website. Your pick.

Under 3.5 is really low for an allopathic US medical school. The only schools around there are most likely:

Morehouse
Howard
Meharry
Ponce (Puerto Rico)

If the picture in your avatar is you, good luck getting into these schools.

I'm talking top 50 school as ranked by US News....additionally, Crieghton is not top ten in any particular academic/clinical category (research, primary care, HiV, etc), so 3.79 is a bit high.

Btw, no hate, but,

Morehouse-Historically black
Howard-Historically black
Meharry-Historically black
Ponce (Puerto Rico)

Am I seeing a pattern? of low stats and being historically black? And does anyone notice how there are few if any white people on their school websites? and even rarely any asians.

The only school that shows in the US News list with a less than 3.5 average GPA is Tulane, with a 3.47.

Edit: The only other MD schools are Howard (3.34) and RFU (3.43), with NYMC and VCU at 3.5.

Meh.... I really like asians, but I guess I can get used to black people =(

Does anybody trust the gpa averages on princetonreview.com ?? I thought they could give some sort of idea.

You not only have to be African-American or Puerto Rican for Ponce, you have to be from the right state. Of all those listed I think Meharry is the only one to seriously consider out of state applicants.
\
Don't worry though. Even if you only have like a 3.4, stellar MCATs and perhaps some postbac will always give you a chance.

If you're down in like the 3.0 range, however, you'd need something spectacular to hook the Adcoms in.

You mean you're not carl?

Oh, I'm him alright. Tonight I'm downloading porn at 14 kilobytes a second!

.....Ha! I'm just kidding. I got a cable modem back here.

Umm... they won't accept you if they get even a whiff of that thinking.

if you rock your mcat you can have a low GPA
check out osteopathic schools, they all have low gpa's
also have a killer extracurricular list and you will get in
join the peace corp and you will get in

was that a rap?
or are you an advertisement ?

hmmm... well i didn't rock the mcat, it rocked me baby all night long (after giving me a daterape pill) and i invented peace corps, but the question is, do i really want to go osteopath?

i would not go osteopath unless i could not get in allopathic med school

I don't think you invented the Peace Corps

CNOEvil: Love the avatar... a parachutist I know uses the same one.

Nope. Take home message: if your GPA is lower than 3.5, and you are a white guy you should consider osteopathy.

Or asian in Cali.

As an African American I am truly offended by your comments, thus I will have to demand that you STOP.
