List of things that 90% of applicants dont have

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Volunteering in another country

i disagree. with the prevalence of "alternative spring break" trips, i think these experiences are pretty easy to come by now.

and what is the point of this thread? 😕

Keep the list going!

👎 :hijacked: :meanie:

how about we start of list of things 90% of premeds do have

who cares about volunteering abroad if you can do the same thing here in this country

The point of this thread is to find things that most Pre-Meds dont have. This will allow us to see what it is rare, and what makes people stand out in the application process.

90% do have ....an inability to form their own decisions about the application process. Hellooooo SDN 😍

99.9999% don't have ...my awesome skills. Fluent in ASL 👍

I thought the 90th percentile was a 32?

Ah. I got a solution:

28/m + 24/f + 18/f

... that'll work just right.

Let's get tha party started!

I don't think its gonna work out... 24/f/SDN here. 😀

You know, this is actually sort of legit. I didn't put my asst modship on my AMCAS, but I know Vihsadas said he did. That's one way to stand out, but I have no clue if people look favorably on that or not.

I would think that depends on your post history.

Mod-ship kind of reminds me of the "RA" in freshman dorms. I haven't pinpointed PRECISELY what it says about a person yet, but I'm fairly certain it says SOMETHING.

Haha! I love it!

My addition to the list is murderous tendencies.

a part time job because their mommy and daddy can't afford to fly them around the world to volunteer abroad...

What's this hostility to travel and assumption that "mommy and daddy" pay for everything every pre-med does? I've seen this a lot on here and I wish SDN would just knock it off already.

I think it's bull**** that volunteering abroad is put above volunteering at home. Some people have jobs to hold down, and not everyone has the opportunity to drop everything and fly half way around the world for weeks or months at a time.

I like your problem solving skills. Is your girlfriend invited, too? Cause 4 is a crowd...😀

It shows commitment to get outside of your comfort zone. I think traveling or going to underserved areas in the US requires just as much commitment and dedication though AND is more beneficial for our society.

Like I said, not everyone can do it. I can't afford missing work for a month because 1. I can't just take a week or a month off...I'd lose my job and 2. I need that money to pay for school since my loans don't cover everything. If I (and the other people in my situation) could afford to volunteer abroad, don't you think we would do it?

She can watch, she likes that. Ahh hell, she can join tha party! SWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITCH!

I don't think volunteering abroad is put above volunteering at home. The traveler may have a more interesting story that catches someone's eye, but that is the extent of the benefit. A more substantial/meaningful and especially a more long-term project close to home will beat vacation volunteering every day of the week.

Traveling to volunteer does not show more commitment and is not more beneficial to society. You don't have to travel to get outside of your comfort zone either. There are underserved populations desperate for assistance close to every university in the US.

Well you have to admit unemployed and unable to pay for school would certainly be outside of your comfort zone.
