Hey Guys,
My counselor told me that the average med school gets 10 to 20 thousand applications, and they only accept about 100 applicants. Is this true?
No.
No. More like 4-5 thousand applicants and 150 to 250 matriculants.

Is the average really that high? i was under the impression that classes of 150 or more are pretty rare
There are a few schools thate get more than 10K applications...GT, GW, and Drexel come to mind.
You might have a class get 10K applications for 100 spots, but this isn't average. And the number of acceptances handed out is usually higher than the number of spots in the class; they predict that a certain #accepted will decline in preference of another school, defer matriculation, etc.
I don't know what stage of the game you're at, but who the hell knows there may be some time in the near future these types of numbers are closer to reality.

That's pretty depressing man.More like 5000 applicants 300 acceptances. But its mostly due to people applying to 30 schools. The overall number is like 35000 applicants 17000 spots, not nearly as bad eh?

Good. Funny how stats can be made to say almost anything..

Yeah, the more popular schools in the more popular US cities have broken the 10,000 mark. I'd guess the average is about half that, though.

Yeah, mostly back up or safety schools everyone applies to but don't really want to go to.

I am starting at Quillen in the fall. They post their statistics in detail for the last 2 years. It is really interesting.

Don't forget that part of the "there are so many applicants at each school" phenomenon is largely due to the fact that we're mostly out there applying to 15, 20, 25, 30...schools. (15 schools was average this year, but I'm sure more than a few people have applied to 60+ schools).
Here are the stats for every school. It's missing the number of acceptances (which is higher than the number of matriculants), but it gives you an idea.

There's a saying: There are lies, there are damn lies, and then there are statistics.

this is also the title of a west wing episode: lies, damn lies, and statistics 😀
OP, i find it useless to focus on statistics like these. i mean, they're kinda interesting but it's a waste of time to worry about it. if you're committed to medical school, just put blinders on and work really hard until you get there. if everyone allowed themselves to be daunted by statistics and odds, well... many fewer people would apply.

Why are they so "popular"? I'm guessing for Georgetown and George Washington it's because of DC. What about Drexel?
