What are your thoughts on listing Prom King as an award/honor, when coupled with an application demonstrating outstanding academics/leadership/volunteering etc?

Why not? Presented in the right light, I believe it might be able to showcase a side of me that isn't your traditional med school applicant. Now obviously, as this is a high school achievement, it would be listed near the end of my slots for awards/honors. I guess my question now is: would it hurt me more than help me?

No one cares that you were prom king; all it shows is that you were popular in HS. No one cares about HS after HS.
Or, it shows that you've developed a decent set of social skills, which is considered a valuable asset as a physician. Furthermore, it has the potential of showing that I'm not a cookie cutter applicant. How many pre-med prom kings do you know?

Where is all this negativity coming from? It was a simple and reasonable question that I posed. It seems there's some unwarranted, uniform, and underlying disdain from pre-meds for anyone who actually had a good time in high school...

You can demonstrate that with your college ECs and during your interview.

I have a feeling you are looking for someone to agree with your point and not looking for advice. Pretty much all activities from high school are pretty much disregarded unless continued on through college. The awards they are looking for are people who earned them through services of the community/workplace (best hospital volunteer of the month or worker of the month) or through effort placed in a competition (winning first place in a science fair or finishing first in marathon). Prom king doesn't fit into either, since it is more about popularity. It doesn't mean it isn't an accomplishment, it just means it is not an accomplishment medical schools are looking for.

There was a similar thread about putting down pageant queen on AMCAS and the answer was the same. You will get the same answer from the faculty members responding to this thread.

Will do. Thank you.

Thank you for being courteous and serious. Something of this nature was all I really wanted from this thread. And I understand now--I'll most likely refrain from listing it.

@IslandStyles808 is dead on. That's what I meant when I said no one cares about HS. I wasn't trying to be condescending, just simply stating that HS activities have no relevance in this process. I probably should have been less snarky.

It's like Al Bundy continuously reminding people that he once scored four touchdowns in a single game while playing HS varsity football (did I just date myself?). That's great, but what did you do after that?

haha it's all good. i'm sorry for being so defensive too. and yeah i totally understand now--i just wanted to get some alternative opinions.

Will do. Thank you.

Just do an activity you enjoy and do it well. Try to find something that is a service to your community and also something you enjoy as well. For example, I volunteer for a program that helps the homeless find jobs. Even if I wasn't applying for medical school or advance degree requiring ECs, I would definitely still be volunteering for the program (that is how much I enjoy it). You don't need to bend over backward to satisfy adcoms in this regard. The main thing is you show passion and effort in giving back to people. These qualities will reflect in your personal statement and interviews in vivid detail. Good luck to you.

Threads like this one make me question any faith I had left in humanity.

Well you're in preallo after all! Allo looks better... I think?

... or maybe not ...

Still, I recommend you visiting the best pen, pencil, eraser etc. threads. Good stuff there.

Don't do it, OP. Even a high school office that required you to put in continued effort- like student body president- should NOT be put on a medical school application. You should have college activities to list. Similarly, most college activities will not be appropriate for residency applications.

Allo has actually managed to surpass pre-allo for dumbest and most toxic forum on the site. It's an impressive accomplishment.

It's probably because the trolls from preallo somehow got accepted to medical school and proceeded to contaminate allo. What a shame!

But being prom king is easy, little effort or skill requires.

This is exactly what med schools are looking for. List it in your application and you're guaranteed acceptance everywhere. Popularity in high school plays a huge role in getting in to medical school. I don't understand why this is even a question!

After all, medical school is just like high school right? Except the girls are waaaaay more legal and wayyyy more anatomical!

Please list it. It tells the adcom a lot about you and what you consider the 15 most important activities and experiences of your life.

Even the iron dame, judie dench is getting into the fray!

I knew a lot. Sure there are some people without social skills in medical school, but the overwhelming majority of my classmates as well as people I've met from other schools are quite popular and socially skilled.

Sure... just what an Obama apologist who wants all doctors to be forced to live in slavery on a FEMA commune would say...

I actually don't hate it as much as everyone else though maybe I'm mistaken. From what I've seen prom kings are generally friendly and uplifting people that others generally want to be around, keep in mind its not just the popular kids in high school that vote for them. I think this would translate well into medicine and a lot of those traits stick with you, from what I've seen in the couple prom kings I know 10+ years later. That said I'm not sure where you would write it on the app without it looking kinda weird. I actually think its a good trait that just shouldn't be on the app.

You're nice @MrChance2 And I happen to agree with you since my husband was prom king 😀

It all depends on whether or not you lost your virginity that night.

Haha this actually made me laugh out loud. Awesome.
