Does anyone live at home during medical school?

I am only going to be 20 minutes from school. I have an apartment set up right now but I have been thinking about commuting.

Any advice?

I'm confused, are you talking about moving back in with your parents? Or are you talking about staying in your apartment that's 20 min from school?

I beleive he is talking about moving in with the parents that are 20 minutes away. Personally I wouldn't do it...I love my parents but I just don't see how it'd work out. Depends on the person though I supposse. I have lived on my own enough where I'd feel kind of limited and expected to do things all the time on top of regular work. I stayed at my parents house for a 3 month span between fall semester and study abroad not too long ago and just that left me going nuts by the end...if money is a huge concern then do it though.

I just graduated from school and came home. I have a hold on an apartment for next year that i would move into in august. Right now i am considering staying at home for next year. Money is a concern, saving 8-10K in loans would be a plus. Problem is here, i don't have my own room and i go nuts with my parents. But if I'm not home to often, it may help.

I know someone who lived at home partially during med school. He'd go home on the weekends (about an hour away) to do laundry, etc. However, he'd come back with enough food for a week so he'd never have to cook. I hear he'd doing his residency in the same city so he can still live at home at the same time. If you see a resident walking around with a pacifier, you'll know it's him. 🙂

if you're looking to save cash, maybe try a roommate. If you look around, i'm sure you can find a roommate style apartment. Personally, i would avoid living with family if it's at all possible. Med school can be crazy stressful at times and living with people who know exactly how to piss you off probably wouldn't be the best idea.

Another reason: my personal example

I called my parents to tell them I would be driving home (6hrs from my school) for Memorial Day weekend because I had a couple job interviews for the summer between first and second year. I then quickly stated that I had a "ton of studying to do because I have several final exams fast approaching," and really didn't even want to come home, but I kind of had to. Okay...we change the subject and talk about other random things. Then my mom asks "so what are we going to do Friday night when you get home!?" Okay mom, thanks for paying attention. And, when I did arrive home, dad wanted to show me all the new plants he added to our backyard and wanted me to "run a few errands" with him for various reasons, which ended up taking several hours.

My point is this - your parents will probably never fully understand what it means when you say "I have to study all weekend" unless they themselves are physicians. And, it's not as though I hadn't seen my parents for months or something...I had just been home 2 weeks earlier. Unless you know your parents (siblings, old high school friends, dog, etc) can leave you alone, it's best to have your own turf. They love you and mean well, and it's hard to tell them you are really busy, but it comes with the medical school territory. Hope this helps!

Depends on how your parents deal with your school.

I went to grad school while living at home. It was great. They understood that I would be available for limited amounts of time during the school year, so they adjusted for me. I would come home for dinner, they would do my laundry, they basically took care of all the little things. That free'd up so much time for me to do my schoolwork and other things.

If I could go to med school from home, I would definitely do it, since I know my parents would be down with it.

I live 1 hour away (2 hours during the worst traffic or a harsh weather condition, both are rare). Having parents around is awesome, not only for food/laundry, but when you need a 5-min study break you have someone to annoy.

But I also have a kickass technological setup in my room with locks on my door. So a heavy metal band can go practice in my living room and I would barely hear it over the crickets chirping in the park outside my window (and I could watch the band with the cameras I have installed)

I would live at home since you are only 20 minutes away from the school. You would probably be saving a lot of money by doing so. But if you can't handle living with the parents then consider getting that apartment even if you have to spend some money. This IS medical school and your focus needs to be in the right area... sooo yeah.

I would choose to live at home. I'm used to my parents since I had to live at home in high school (very cramped conditions) and in for part of college. It all depends on what feels best to you... just think about it. hope this helps

Its very possible to live at home. My parents live 5mins from my school, though I personally chose to live in an apt even closer. I wanted to live with other classmates, however there are several people at my school that live with their parents and have no trouble at all, they don't miss a beat academically, socially or whatnot. Its completely a personal issue, what your home situation is like, where and how you prefer to study etc.

I live at home too. It really kicks ass. No food expenses, no rent, no worries. And you can really concentrate on studying too. I live 40 minutes from school.

If your parents aren't complete a$$holes, live at home and save the money.

Encourage them to go on vacations and away on the weekends so you can bang your significant other!

(NYCOM) I lived at home for this entire first year of school. When I was home I was expected to pitch in from time to time, but overall my family was very understanding about my need to study and be left alone. Additionally, everyone was out working so I'd be at home for a minimum of 8 hrs alone. My commute: I had it down to a science, I learned the traffic and which roadways to travel avg time 45mins. Thank g-d for the streaming lectures.

I'm starting NYCOM in the fall, and after alot of thought, I've decided to live at home with my parents (~15 min away). Although I'd rather live in an apartment, I can't justify taking out an extra 10-12K a year in loans when I already have a "home" close by.

With that said, my parents are quiet and really don't bug me, and they don't interfere when they know I have to study... if that wasn't the case, I might be reconsidering...

NO way would I live at home again. Sure I study alot, but I do have some fun once in a while. I may be 26 y/o now, but Im still not going to come home from the bar with some lady on my arm. Im too old to sneak in.

Or quite simply, random people.
