No, but as medical school costs are getting out of control, I would never look down on anyone who does this. Separate room and board is like another tuition payment in itself.Anyone live with their parents while attending med school?

When I hear of classmates that live with their parents now or are going to while doing their clinicals, my knee-jerk thought is "Grow up."
But that's probably because I'm jealous.

If rent is $700-$800 a month, no. If rent is $1500-$2000/month, live with the parents!
I will not be but at these rates, I would if I could.

How are you supposed to bring shawties back to da crib when you live with your parents?
Ok, study break over, just thought I would mention what seems to be unsaid in this discussion. FWIW, when my parents are here, I find that I can't really enjoy myself with my friends as much.

What do you think the income is for a typical medical student?
i know a couple MS1s who live at home with their parents. but they are all moving out for the second year. their parents' house happened to be kind of far from school (~30-40 min).
That's why most people go out with their friends to have fun.How are you supposed to bring shawties back to da crib when you live with your parents?

Income is $0, but the loans add up.What do you think the income is for a typical medical student?
No. Just no. Don't do it. I drive 30 min each way, and 1 hr/day actually adds up. Now I'm not saying you're going to be pressed for studying every minute of the day, but that hr is another in which you could relax or do something fun, instead of driving. I would live as close to campus as you can. Also your parents are going to want to do family stuff and sometimes you just want to chill and not do that. Plus there are pretty large social/academic opportunities missed by living 30 min away from campus. I'm not going to hang around campus till 10 to do something people want to do later at night, and I'm certainly not going to drive another hour. This goes for hanging out and studying stuff.
Obviously if it's hella expensive then it's different, but if you are under 1k/month, jump all over.

Do you get along with your parents?
Are they a source of negative drama?
Do they treat you like a 12 year old? Or can you kick it with girls/friends in the basement?

I mean saving money is very important. Personally though I think it would be difficult but I suppose it depends a lot on your relationship with your parents.

Grew up in a college town attended undergrad 3 miles from home. I lived on campus the whole time (Dorm freshman year, 2 years in coop, 1 year in frat house), but went home on weekends/night that I needed to study/work on a project. Home has quiet space, great computer resources, great movie theatre in basement, lots of food, and adult conversation when I needed it. Now that I'm staying in the same town for med school, I'll be living at home, only 3 miles from Med school and campus. Both my parents work at the Hospital (Dad is faculty, Mom is staff). See friends on campus, go out all the time, so it works for me. Very dependent on having chill parents, great house in a good location. Will save a ton of money.
I'm a resident and, if I could, I would still live with my parents.
What is wrong with living with parents ?
As someone's progression through school increases, so does their desire for autonomy usually. This is heavily compromised while living at home. I understand the costs involved(as I am living at home currently), yet it still isn't worth it for me.
Depends on your relationship with your parents. If they are overbearing or naggy, then probably would recommend against it. If they give you your space when you're at home, then go for it. Living at home would've meant a >30 min drive to the hospital every morning. The alternative (living walking distance from it) for < $700/month was an easy decision.
lol too proud? I'm easily saving 5oK over 4 years. As for living at home, it's all about what you make of it. Don't think I'll be regretting this when I'm raking in my 50K /year as a resident.

Would you believe I listen to that song every day? Nothing like it to get me pumped for the day.

I wish. I live in a hole in the wall.
It's great if your parents don't fight. Mine decided to fight during my first few weeks of Step 1 prep, so there's a reason why I was on here more than usual. -_-

Had I ended up at the state school my parents live by, I probably would have lived there for the first 2 years. When I made the drive from their house to the school, I did it in just over 20 when avoiding major traffic hours. And I have a great relationship with my parents and they are very understanding and respect my time (I was staying there the few weeks before my MCAT and took the exam there since better dates were available). So short of my parents living right across the street from the school and our finished basement being a walk-out for me to convert into a sort-of apartment of my own (I woulda just used my old bedroom), I'd have just about the best possible situation for doing so. That said, there are the social issues that have been mentioned. I haven't been the party host for a while anyway, but really, @Arkangeloid I don't know how serious you were being, but that really was my main concern when considering this - it might be hard for relationship purposes, maybe just even getting girls to take me seriously, while living with my parents.

Have to fly girls to foreign countries to get sex.

I would if my parents lived closer.
I took a 3 year gap working and lived with my mother - she lives literally across the street from my work place. Would do it again next year in med school but that's a 30-50 min drive each way. Rent by med school is 800$ min, while my mother only asked for 300. But at that point, I may as well live in my own house that is 45 min away for free.

The dollar sign goes in front of the number in the US, just like it did in kindergarten.

I really disagree. and I'm not sure if you mean you have your own place and your mother's house available(for the whole free or 300 thing), but I would personally pay the 800/month to save 45 min driving each way. That's an hour and a half of driving, every single day. If you have a car that gets good gas mileage(lets say 30 mpg avg), you're still burning like 2 gallons of gas each way, which is a conservative estimate. So that's 4 gallons/trip minimum, or a tank a week, or more depending on your car. (provided you go to class, however I think the actual cost of gas being 0 if you never went to class would still make living close to school favorable). So 20 gallons/week, is $3.65 x 20 = 73 bucks/ week or roughly 300/month just for that. That's without maintenance on your car factored in(miles are going to add up quick driving that far) or a parking pass. And don't forget we are being pretty favorable with the 30 mpg, and the actual gallons you'd spend. Also you'd have various professional functions to attend, like shadowing, community stuff, etc, which is all likely to be close to your school, meaning more driving. Don't forget social events. Most of your classmates are going to live near the school. Want to see them? Alright that's another hour and a half of driving. Now don't forget if you decide to not go to class to save gas money, then you are limiting yourself socially.
Now here's the kicker, AN HOUR AND A HALF OF YOUR TIME EVERY TIME YOU GO TO SCHOOL. That's an hour you could be sleeping and 30 min you could be eating, or whatever you want to do. That's worth it's weight in gold. Even if you have to go to your school once/week, which I would think is the bare minimum for required stuff, I'd still say all the extra crap you will have around your school will make the distance not be worth the savings. Keep in mind, the farther you drive, the more delays you can get into, increasing your time loss even further. In medical school, your time is more valuable than anything. It's really really hard to put a price on that.
Also telling an opposite-gender that you live at home is pretty terrible. Sure some might understand, but I'd still say it's negative.
I live 30 min away, and definitely would not do it again. Will be moving to my school next year for sure.
At what point would it be worth it to live with parents?
In my situation, I would have a 14-17 minute drive to school. The estimated expense for off campus housing (from the COA by the school) is $1500 a month. Dunno how much on campus housing is but I would guess cheaper, ~800-1000 a month.
On the other hand I want to make friends and **** chicks

That's a really quick commute. You really can't beat saving $18,000 a year. Go out with friends to have fun and get a hotel room for the latter or do it at her place. At what point would it be worth it to live with parents?

Yeah around 15 is totally doable, and that's the point where if you had to run back to the school for some random reason twice in a day it wouldn't be a big deal. I look at it where once you get to the point where if you'd forget something, you'd be like " **** I have to drive all the way back there," then it's not a good idea.

Do you and your parents get along? Would you have your own space to study/sleep? Will they be respectful of your schedule? If the answer to those three questions is yes, then heck yeah you should live at home. Bonus if they're going to cook, clean, and do your laundry for you too. Seriously, if your parents will give you that kind of moral and logistical support, and you're fool enough to look that gift horse in the mouth, what say you ask your parents if they'd like to adopt me as an older sister for you, and I'll come live with them while you live in my s***hole apartment and pay my rent and utilities? Tell them I even promise to pick my dirty socks up off the floor and eat my broccoli. At what point would it be worth it to live with parents?

In kindergarten, I wasn't in US. My MCAT verbal was a 7... I did not realize my English teachers hung out here. My bad.The dollar sign goes in front of the number in the US, just like it did in kindergarten.

lolz
then do the math.I'm currently debating this question. I can either live 5-10 minutes from the school for ~550/month or 20 minutes from the school for free. The thing is, I don't want what little social life I'll have to suffer..

Do you consider the extra freedom and the ~10 minutes you save commuting one way worth $550/month? It's something you'll have to decide on your own. With that being said, you can still have a social life while living with your parents (I did). You can also live right on campus and still neglect your social life. But if there's a will, there's a way. Not living with parents =/= automatic social life.
The choice is ultimately in your hands.
I lived at home for my gap years, but I absolutely have to get away for at least 1 year of medical school. My mom literally will not fall asleep until I am safe at home, even if I get home at like 11:00PM on a Friday night. Makes me feel so guilty. And as the guy said above, can't bring the shawtys home with a mom like that.
