Hi guys,

I was wondering if you could still use the LizzyM score for low GPA/high MCAT or high GPA/low MCAT combinations.

For example, I have:

A really low GPA- 3.25cum/3.3 sci

Highish MCAT- 37P(12P,11V,14B)

I was wondering if my LizzyM score of 69 is still valid when trying to find target MD schools to apply to? For most schools I am below the 10th percentile for GPA and above the 90th percentile for MCAT. Should I even be using this method?

GPA x 10 + MCAT. Something like a 70 makes you competitive I think.

Use the LizzyM score as ballbark to figure out what medical schools to apply to. Since you have a high MCAT score and a low GPA its tough to say whether your MCAT can help overcome your low GPA. Some medical schools may be fine with your low GPA and high MCAT other schools may not. There really is no predictability in applying to medical schools. My best advice is apply to a broad range of school and hope for the best.

I think it's safer to just compare MCAT and GPA separately to each school... You might be pushing it if you use the LizzyM score, since you do fall into the high MCAT/low GPA extreme, imo.

The exception to the LizzyM score that I see over and over in other threads about the LizzyM score, is exactly your situation. Unfortunately, having 2 extremes doesn't do you much good because it's very hard to measure which schools would want you. The schools that accept high MCAT scores also want to see a high GPA; and you would want better than "lower" schools because you have a great MCAT score.

BTW, IMO, your situation with a high MCAT and low GPA is better than a high GPA with a low MCAT.

Good luck!

You could go on mdapplicants.com and see how people with your stats did. Keep an eye out for the demographic though because that changes things.

A thread sometime ago mentioned a 75 is the SDN standard for competitiveness (I suppose for top schools, anyway ... 38 + 3.7, 35 + 4.0, etc.)

Not a good idea because the sample sizes are so small and overachievers are over-represented.

Matriculant average is like a 68 (3.7/31), so I'd say anything above that is competitive.

A person with a 75 can basically choose any school they want.

For the OP, LizzyM score kind of breaks down with high MCATs/low GPAs.

wow, I have almost the exact same stats as you! I've been wondering the same thing, but an adcom member told me it will be a total crap shoot, so "apply broadly"
sigh.

Keep in mind it's just a guideline to recommend what schools you should be applying to. I know people with very high LizzyM scores (72+) that didn't get in anywhere.

I had pretty much exactly your stats. From my experience it depends on the school.

Just apply broadly and to mainly "safety" schools. The GPA will pull you down and unfortunately many schools will not overlook the low science GPA even with that MCAT score.

Have you thought about post bacc or grad courses?
