Loan burden for class of 2021

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Travis once again acting like he's God's gift to dentistry

The SDN community have complied their own estimates too

https://www-forums.studentdoctor.net/index.php?threads/1223909/

Travis is overestimating a lot of certain schools with his methodology, but the SDN one is underestimating by not including annual tuition increases.

First of all, Bi#$@ please. Heaven forbid anyone try to give you a realistic idea of how debt is going to affect your future life.
Second, if I was wondering who would have more realistic data. It probably would be Studentloanplanner...Plus, having been through this myself and being familiar with classmates debt upon graduation you'll find the # to be way higher than what the school estimated.
You seem to be the exception though because averages are only for suckers...

It is quite interesting how personally offended people get both when people try to present debt numbers AND when people dismiss those debt numbers.

Do you drive in early to avoid rush hour then? That would be my big concern on a route that is 30 mins with no traffic.

Yeah that's the one problem for me because since the A&M school is smack dab in downtown and class starts at 8 and ends at 5, it's basically rush hour both ways, which kind of sucks. My plan is to get a nice gym membership (with showers and lockers) close to downtown and drive up early to get a good workout in, get ready, and hop to class. After school I'll probably stay for like an hour or 2 and study before heading back.

It'll be a long day but it's the difference between a 25 minute drive and an hour drive each way of unproductively. Unfortunately I won't have a Tesla to put on autopilot and read my notes on the highway

Maybe you'll post one of them someday, aren't you accepting $500k+ debt?
around 450ish, yeah. Might get a little help from parents, might get the HPSP. At the end of the day I'm not worried about the debt. It's just gonna be a speedbump to my success with what I plan to do with my career

It's a good plan, but don't underestimate the amount of studying involved in dental school. I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt that will be enough time to study (unless you plan to continue at home).

@aggietxdent , I really like your plan. I think you can pull it off.

This Texas A&M dental student drove & switched two trains in his daily commute, was the President of a dental organization, coached football, and got a workout in, all while attending the same dental school as @aggietxdent

Oh hell no I wish I could get away with studying an hour or 2 a day!! I can't even get away with that now in undergrad lol. I just meant to avoid traffic, I'd stay on campus till like 6:30. But I'm trying to get some free mom approved dinner in my body by then.

There're people running dental office during their D2 year at UK school of dentistry. I don't think spending an hour commute will impact his study time. I also know people spend two hours commuting so they can live at home through out 4 years of their dental school and later got into ortho program in their dental school.

I might do the same thing, but I like to workout in the afternoon. Maybe I need to make some changes before dental school starts.

Why are you telling me what dental school is or is not like? I'm not a pre-dent, I know exactly what dental school entails.
Please check your facts; the UK students you are talking about are not D2's running their practice. Also, 2 hours commuting a day equals 10 hours a week not spent on studying, sleeping, exercising, taking care of yourself, etc. This may not sound like alot, but it is.
Dental School is not like undergrad, they are very different. It is much more demanding.

Yes. I leave earlier a little to be ahead of traffic in the morning, and stay back a little after class until the traffic die down. I study when I stay back and pretty much netflix after I get home

I'm not, all I said was spending an hour commuting is not going to be the end of world. I can't recall the two dental students at UK were D2, D3 or D4, but the point is they brought a dental practice and rebuilt it. Imagine how much work they had to put in to make that practice growing again. All I'm trying to say is not everyone has the luxury to study 12 hours/7 days a week life don't stop when you in dental school. Every year there're people get married and have kids during dental school and they all end up graduate on time.

I think marquette might be over estimated. I could be wrong but my math has it way lower than that. that is saying my last year will average over a 100k and even then I can't take loans for the cause COA is in the 80s, might be lower D4.

lmao calm your ass down

This is what I am talking about. I wasn't talking about the content he is producing, but the discussion you guys are having about us on DT. You guys are so quick to dismiss what we say on SDN and always acting all high and mighty.

If you read through what Travis wrote in his thread, even HE admits that some numbers are overestimated because of how he calculates them. So how am I not being realistic by pointing out facts?

Stop thinking that you guys are the only ones with a calculator and understands how interest works. :smack:

Oh man this is the gift that keeps on giving! :highfive:
So help me understand where you're coming from. You're feelings are hurt because dentists on the quoted thread are being dismissive of the opinions of pre-dents and students? Is that correct? [*imagine me saying this in a non-threatening, calm, soothing tone while you are in your safe space and I'm handing you a participation trophy for this thread:bow:]

Take a look at how long I've been on SDN. Been here done that. After you get out and maybe while you're in school you'll start to value D-town a little more. Then every now and then you'll come back to see what's new and realize...:bang:

You are doing the the AF 3 year HPSP program. I don't know why you are so worked up about this

This is the last warning. If a professional tone cannot be maintained, this thread will shut down.
Cut it out.

My calculator has instate at 380k and oos at 430k
annual tuition increase 1.05%
interest at 6%
room at 20k
no books
instrument at 4.5k (average of 4 years)

I think he's estimating a 15-25 year payback plan.

For example, there is a guy on dental town that said this:
I graduated UTHSCSA in 2005 with 110k debt total. It is now 296k. That is a 2.96x increase or 186k increase in 12 years.
Interest man. Interest is killer. All those numbers from the "Ridiculously expensive schools thread" are low, because the actual payback is going to be much higher over time. I'm not sure how this guy's loan amount increased by so much, but if you take around 20 years to payback a loan, (at 6 or 7 percent or so) the total cost of the loan will be roughly double the original amount that you borrowed. I think that's why people that really understand finances out there (Dave Ramsey, the StudentLoanPlanner guy) are so against debt.

Remember the wife of a recently graduated dentist from an Arizona school called up Dave Ramsey when he was almost done with school? They were going to have $480K of debt and wanted to buy a house, their reasoning being that renting just throws money away. Ramsey said no, and I think I understand why. Buying something with money you don't have (aka getting a loan) is also a lot like throwing money away too. Not only are there a lot of costs associated with buying and closing on a house, but if you don't have a lot of money to put into a house, the total amount you could pay could be double the face value of the house (or more) if you take a long time to pay it off. Also, a lot of your money will go into paying the interest of the loan and not the principle.

Sorry for the tangent, but I think it just puts it into perspective of why debt is so bad.

Also, heads up: I did some research on VCU (the low CoA caught my eye). The asterisk Perioprobe used was I believe for in-state tuition and from this cycle's VCU thread, it seems that getting in state tuition is near impossible (unless you can prove you will stay in Virginia longterm?). You can find anecdotal evidence on this from what current dental students are saying on that thread. Still a great school from what I've seen online, but most likely will cost more than $218k.

I'm not sure why VCU is so low on his list either. I always thought Alabama was the cheapest school.

housing can be done at about half of that. that is what school said. Granted, a place for one person will cost you close to 20k if you pick a nice place.

Travis used a third party website for VCU. His numbers are way off... VCU themselves estimate COA $330,000 for all four years, in state.

Why do people struggle with VCU's tuition calculator so much? It's pretty self explanatory, they just show the costs per semester rather than per year.

I don't think the calculator was working for him...

Yep, VCU is 330 for the in-state folks. 440 for out of state.

The school overestimates your expenses though so even then it isn't so high.

@aggietxdent

What highway will you be taking in? I'm about 30 mins north of the school, but I am absolutely moving to Dallas itself. Interview day I took 75 @ around 6:30 and barely made it, if I remember correctly it started at 8:30? I am not doing that everyday haha.

Plus I foolishly want to move in with my girlfriend so we'll see how that goes 😉

@Jimbo3712

Do you know what area of Dallas you'll be staying in yet?

He's probably inputting the info into the calculator wrong. I just tried it and it works fine.

IDK, then. I don't want to speak for him beyond that since that is all he said. The info he put down was grossly inaccurate, though. I just wanted to note it.

I live 45 min (one way) from my UG... I understand why you want to move to Dallas completely.

Our boy is growing up! Haha best of luck, hope things go well. Is she a dental student too?

Lol! She is not a dental student (despite me trying to convince her so many times, I'll think I'm making progress, then she just says it's all disgusting so it's not even an option :/ ), but we've been together since highschool and over long distance in undergrad, so I don't think me going to school and her working should make things collapse, but obviously you never know!

That being said I find myself staring at her teeth more and more recently... I could definitely identify them out of a huge line up, do you observe a women's teeth when you're interested now?

That's just awesome, man. Congratulations 🙂

I would never be able to identify anyone's teeth from a line-up. Any interest in doing something like forensic dentistry?

I'm going to be taking the Dallas North Tollway basically all the way down. The gym I want to go to is right off the tollway and its about a 10 min drive from the gym to the school through downtown.

Trying to stay as close as poss, without breaking the bank. So far my potential roommate and I are considering the marquis on tx st, but too early to tell. Plus we just started talking about 3 bedroom apt because that would shave off $100 potentially
