I interviewed at Baylor on Monday, and I must say it's a great school...high standards for their students, huge patient pool, a really rad simulation lab...all in all, you'd definitely graduate from there a competent dentist. The only problem I had with it, is that it's in Dallas. It seems a lot of you are eager to get here, but I am so ready to leave! Texas has been kind to me, but I really need a new environment. I know, in the end, I won't make my decision based on location, but I was just wondering, how much did you factor location into where you applied?

Not very much. Although I purposely stayed away from the "redneck" states.

location is VERY important to me. I didn't apply to any place that I didn't want to live in for 4 years.

Watch it. Don't make me open up a can of whoop-azz

Location is a big player for me. I preferably want to stay in California, or somewhere near by like UNLV or Arizona. My main reason is my family. My son and one on the way are the only grandchildren my parents have. And I would want them to see eachother as much as possible. Going to a school on the east coast would allow them to see eachother maybe once a year. Plus I'm not a big fan of the east coast. I'm a west coast playa!!!!

Same here. Location is very important. Dental school is very hard, and it helps to be able to have your family and friends around to offer emotional support. My brother is my best friend, and I try to see him as much as I can. Plus, I am very close to my family overall, and it would be hard to leave them. Right now, most of my family only live about an hour away. I know it would be hard to see them if I lived 5- 10 hours or more away. Location and being close to my family is very important to me. But, ultimatetly I will pick the school that will offer me the best education. But location will still weigh heavy on my decision.

Closness to family is important. Personally I have lived in the same city for all 23 years of my life. A drastic change of location for 4-5 years won't be all that bad for me. I'm moving from Calgary, AB to Boston, MA next year. Thats almost entirely a cross continent move, and I couldn't be more excited!

I thought Canada was our 51st state?😕

Funny, I thought Puerto Rico was the 51st state, and Canada was the 52nd.😕

heh, yeah i think you are right

nah, Canada is just America Jr.

Just kiddin  I heard that off a simpsons episode and thought it was amusing

I had to get you back for the redneck comment 😀

I'm an Albertan (which is pretty much the Canadian version of Texas). Just having some fun at both of our expenses! 😀

I know. It takes alot to hurt my feelings. Heck, I even thought it was funny.

I had a friend who was born in Massachtusetts and moved down here while she was in middle school. When she would go back to visit, her friends would ask her, with a straight face, " Do Texans ride horses to school?"

Now, I just thought that was halarious, but those kids were being serious and really thought we rode horses to school!!

Location is HUGE. Lets face it, dental school is dental school is dental school. We will get a good education wherever we go. Dental school is essentially a prep to pass the boards. After that, what seperates the good dentists from the bad are those who continue to educate themselves with good CE courses throughout their careers and those who don't. So, if your gonna get a good education somewhere let that somewhere be a place you are comfortable with and you enjoy! I am married with four kidlins and so where I go for dental school is very important as far as cost of living, schools, housing, and overall quality of life. I will definitely want to be comfortable with the Dschool of course but the location will have a large impact on my overall decision.

God bless all canucks!!! I got dual citizenship, so long live the maple leaf!

location is 1/2 the picture for me, anyone ever heard of nova southeastern.... Ft. Lauderdale Fl, baby.

then there's Puerto Rico... need I say more?

you better know some espanol for either school.

my $.02, but you gotta live phat while you still have a pulse.

I factored it in quite a bit, but not until I got interviews and visited places.

It weighed heavily with me because I have a wife and a son (and another on the way). I knew that I would be okay during school (there isn't much life outside dental school), but I wanted my family to feel comfortable.

With this in mind, I knew I couldn't go to Case or Temple.

Gavin,

What's up with Case, is it a dive or what? What made you decide that you didn't want to have your family there?

Anyone else know of any schools that they wouldn't take a family to?

I'm fortunate enough to live in a state with four dental schools-- Two state-funded, very affordable schools, one BIG school that is a bit easier to get into due to its size, and one prestigious school.

What can I say? I😍NY!

Depending on where you live, I would but skeptical about USC. If you ever had dreams of living in the ghetto, then USC is your school. Just make sure you carry a gun.

I remember reading a list of the best and worst cities to live in the world. NYC was the only city to make both lists! So either you love it, or you hate it.

USC is the worst place to go as far as area. It's the ghetto of all ghettos. Dental students accrue an average of 31 self-defense killings over their 4 year stay. Like jred378 said, if you plan on going to USC, start applying now..,not for the school, but for a license to carry a gun!

I didn't think Case's location was that bad. The east part of Cleveland is not the most scenic area, but I certainly didn't feel the need to arm myself.

I say we compile a list of schools with our opinions on the immediate vicinity. Or, at the minimum, make a list of the ghetto places in which you don't want to be caught alone at night. Anyone with more experience touring these areas want to contribute to the "Ghetto List"?

-Temple
-USC

Things are better these days as a legacy of NYC Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's tough crime policies, but Columbia SDOS's neighborhood used to be a real dump. 😛

Out-of-towners might still consider the place a dump, but to street-smart New Yorkers it's just another neighborhood. 😀

I went to undergrad at Case and still live/work in the area. As far as being safe, its not that bad at all. I have never had a problem walking alone at night or anything (im a guy though) however there has been bad stuff that has happened on campus, but rarely. However, the areas off campus, which everyone stays away from can get pretty bad. My main problem is with Cleveland in general, which isnt all that bad, but isnt all that great by any means.

I used to be the biggest hockey fan, but ever since the mid 90s I cant stand watching it. I do still play from time to time. As for dental schools, I'm already accepted to Tufts (and if your wondering how I already got accepted look at the thread titled "Accepted!). I'm still thinking about applying to canadian schools this year, but we'll see.
