I live about 1500 miles away. I will pack the items in boxes. But I want the moving company to carry everything from apartment into the trailer, drive it, and carry everything into whatever apartment I find. I do not have any relatives that could help me so I want someone else to do all the carrying. Currently, I have a large 1bd apartment. I am curious on how much something like this would cost.

I have a lot of stuff starting from furniture (not that expensive, but not cheap either, furniture... but why spend time/money to buy new?), audio equipment, speakers, TV, bed, clothes. I moved 4 years ago and I had to rent a midium-size Uhaul. Now, I have more stuff.

AACOMAS has a "discount" deal with Mayflower transit - http://www.aacom.org/about/discounts/Pages/MovingProgram.aspx

It might be worth checking out, although, when I got an estimate from them, it was about 3 x the $3,000 average price they quote on the website, and wasn't significantly different than anyone else's price. Hence my quotes around "discount". This was for a small, two bedroom house moving about 2500 miles - Seattle to Tampa 😱

You should definitely shop around, and while I guess expensive is a relative term, after comparing a lot of deals, I ended up renting a U-haul, doing it myself, and saving about $6,000. Anyway you do it, it's not cheap...

How much was Uhaul rental?

I went to uhaul website and it came out about 1100 for rental and $70/hr for two people for doing all the lifting. I will probably rent the 17' one.

The other thing you may want to keep in mind is where you'll be 3rd and 4th year. If you're planning to stay near the school for rotations, setting up a more permanent residence makes good sense; however, if you're going to be moving around for rotations you may not want to settle in too much...

well, I will need to leave my stuff somewhere when I am gone on rotations. instead of moving it to storage for 2 or so month, I do not mind paying rent. I think most of my rotations are going to be in within 45 min drive though.

The absolute rock bottom cheapest way to go is Broadway Express. I moved a gigantic houseful (3 br) across the country for around $2,500.00. You pay by the linear foot in an 18-wheeler. I have absolutely colossal furniture, armoires, gigantic leather couches, queen sleigh beds, double pedestal dining table, huge marble buffet, etc....I hired two guys to help me load, plus paid the driver (Woody Kuhne) to load and unload, and it was sooo much cheaper than anything else I got estimates on. Here's the website and the review I wrote:

Hi! I just moved with Broadway Express and the move went flawlessly. I bought 11 linear feet and ended up using 12 linear feet. The cost was $2,512.00, which was about $8,000.00 less than local Pittsburgh companies said it would cost me to move with them. I'm so glad I found MovingScam.com and read the reviews of Broadway Express. I moved across the continent to Reno, Nevada, and NOT ONE PIECE OF FURNITURE OR GLASS ITEM OR ANYTHING was broken.

The driver was Woody Kuhne and he was AMAZING. I hired him for $30.00 per hour and had another worker and myself to load the truck in Pittsburgh. He deferred my paying him until he arrived and totally unloaded everything from his 18 wheeler, after which he underquoted me a fair price to pay him for hiring him both in Pittsburgh and Reno. He was extremely professional and was a great strategist, playing a game of jigsaw puzzle in his truck in order to maximize my 11 linear feet. He did everything possible to make my move easy, troublefree and flawless. He gave me his cellphone number and we communicated every day of the passage time, which was about eight days. I have never felt so reassured. He is a credit to that company and I hope everyone that reads this, including his employers, know how professional of a driver Woody is.

I would highly recommend this company. If I ever move again, I will definitely use Broadway Express for my move. Thank God I found them.

Tell Woody I sent you!

My mom and dad work as a team for a moving company and have been the #1 driver nationally for a moving company for several years.....they are also affiliated with the one listed on AACOMAS, and sometimes do those moves too. You can call the moving companies and get a free quote. A lot of people don't know that you can negotiate with them and tell them that if it is too expensive you will just get a UHaul or something of that matter and they will compete with that. My parents move people all the time that would have paid more for a UHaul than using them. Good luck!

I decided to do Uhaul. The 17' trailer is about $1300 for me. With labor for loading/unloading and car trailer, it comes out $2k. I am also selling my old textbooks and MCAT stuff online. Actually, i think I end up trashing/giving away a lot of stuff.

We used ABF U-Pack...and moved a 4BR house for just under 3K.

It was a lot of work, but saved us a ton of cash. I would HIGHLY recommend trashing a LOT of stuff, or selling it, however.

We filled a whole pup of theirs. I think it was 28'. You rent by the foot, however.

This is going back about 4 years ago...but I did a move from Chicago to Las Vegas. I had a large 2 bedroom apt, roughly 1700sq ft. I priced U-Haul, Hertz, and another rental company and it ran me about 1900 to include a trailer hitch for my car. So, I priced Atlas Van Lines and the total cost for moving the furniture and boxes out of the apt and deliver and put the boxes in my house was about $2200. It was soooooo worth it.

Now, I have to find that same company and get back to Chicago...it looks like I'll be renting my house out since the market here stinks.

In my opinion, you should contact to a moving company. They do the work in most reliable and professional manner.

I'm sure that the OP figured this situation out...3 years ago.
