So, I've been working in the two local emergency rooms as a volunteer (one for three years as the lead volunteer trainer, and the other for one year). I've been feeling incredibly burnt out going to both every week, especially since one of them doesn't have much for me to do most days. Do you guys think it'd be okay to focus more on charities and one time volunteering events/shadowing during the summer/coming academic year and less on my ER volunteering, or would that be seen badly?

Thanks in advance.

Quality over quantity.

If its burning you out, drop one of the ERs.

Thanks for your reply. The repetition of it all is mostly what wore me out, especially since there's usually not much for me to do unless I'm training new volunteers. I'll talk to my volunteer coordinator. 🙂

If you don't get much out of it drop them. You've already got 3 years of volunteering and leadership out of it. Plus you've shown you can commit to things outside school for long periods of time.

As far as value for med school admission, I think you've got all you can out of them.

Thank you! It sort of feels like I'm "asking permission" to drop them here, but it feels good to know that I don't HAVE to do them for another year after I feel like I've gone as far as I can with them.

You'll be fine if you drop one (or both) of the ER volunteering positions. For the 3-year one, you've already held a leadership position and I would continue it if you enjoy it. Otherwise you can drop whichever ER volunteering position you like less. It'll free up time to do other activities and also diversify your clinical and non-clinical volunteering experiences.

EC's are not meant to be self flagellation as some sort of masochistic requirement for medical school (we have organic chem and the MCAT for that). Go forth and be released from the bonds of the ER if you wish. As Moses said "let my people go." Sorry, I am preparing for Passover. And, after a week of eating Maztoh, "Let My People Go" has an entirely different meaning

I wish I could like this ten more times.
