Yes, I know I could probably search for this but I want a fresh thread. Is it sad I've never bought a suit before?

What are some good places to find quality suits for not too much $$? Recs for stores? Other tips, tricks?

I especially want to hear from the ladies, but guys are welcome too. 🙂

i got a nice looking suit from marshalls...i believe it was less than $50...surprisingly, its more comfortable than the $100 ones I have... ps- i'm a girl

$50? 😱 What kind of material was it? Not polyester I hope.

My girlfriend got her suit for job interviews at Express. Very hot 😉

No, you can get full suits at express, and I do recommend. I got mine at Dillards for like 150, but it wasn't polyester. (This was a womans' suit).

Express doesn't sell suits, only jackets. I think.
Well seeing as how I was there with her when she bought it...

K&G in New Carrolton, Maryland. You could get a brand new single breast suit for about $109. Well, about $115 with tax. If you're not in the area goggle K&G. There may be one near you.

Ann Taylor Loft has really cute suits..about $180 when not on sale. But if you also try department stores like Lord and Taylor or JCPenny you can really find some stuff. I got an awesome suit there for $100. It is hit or miss though.

I forgot about Ann Taylor, they're like the only store that carries petites.

jcrew all the way... its not cheap by any means, but they are quality and will last a life time.. but budget about $400

I found my suit (skirt suit) at Ann-Taylor. Very satisfied.

Here's some coupons for Ann Taylor, and Express (For those shopping for suits at these stores)

FYI, these are from www.spoofee.com

Go to Macy's, JCPenney's, Sears, or dept. stores like those.. nice suits but not as expensive as elsewhere. And they're always having sales, which I guess is a plus.

Check out Zara's and H&M.. being a lady you shouldn't have any problem finding clothes they always have 3x more stuff for you gals. There is alway Banana Republic too.

Thanks but I hate buying stuff online. I like to scratch and sniff the clothes first. 👍

Do you not have Joseph Bank, Brooks Brothers, Nordstrom, or some upper end clothier where you live? Any one of these stores will have an attendant that can get you in a conservative, well fit suit.

And if you can't afford it there, at least get your sizes and find out what you're looking for, and then go to a discounter.

I have a Nordstrom's nearby, but I generally don't go there as the price tags scared me away the first time. $3k for a men's suit. 😱 No discount place or outlets here unfortunately.

I'm going to have to check out all the recommended stores, some of them I've never heard of.

I got mine at Ann Taylor Loft for less than $200. It is so cute, and I definitely had the best suit out of the girls at my interview.

I would just get a nice looking suit from some place like dillards or something and then invest in some nice shirts and ties from Nordstrom. The attendants there are top notch and you'll be blown away at some of the ideas they have because they look fabulous and conservative, but you would've never thought about it. They're also a great place to get shirt sizes that are usually hard to find at other department stores.

for the guys, you don't really have to spend a bunch of money on the suit to look good. What is really important is getting it properly tailored. I highly recommend buying your suit at a place that has good tailors on hand to help you not only pick out the right size and fit, but will alter it as needed.

Can't agree more.. I get everything fitted..

I would look awesome in this.

yea. fitted is good. here, arm length a good bit short and pant length too long.

I saw some guy interviewing wearing an AX belt, with a big, silver AX symbol in the front. not quite professional-looking.

I just came back from four years in Italy, so this isn't such a pompass response. The same DK suit I bought at the Men's Warehouse 8 years ago for $1000; I was able to get at least 4 for the same price even with the euro conversion.

I have ended up giving most of my suits to family membors lately, so I'm going to be forced to take an Italian vacation pretty soon to restock my wardrobe before school starts. If anyone is willing to travel and wants advice on where to get great Virgin Wool suits, that last forever, just let me know.

I got a DK suit at Macy's on sale for $300, with Kenneth Cole shirt and tie.

I'm sorry if this question has already been answered, but for the girls, underneath your suit jacket, would it be ok to just wear a white spaghetti strap? I tried my suit on with a white button-up shirt but it looks kinda weird b/c the shirt doesn't button up all the way.
i know this is probably not even worth posting but any help would be nice!! 😳

typically i don't think that those button up shirts are supposed to be buttoned all the way up. If i recall correctly, i usually see the collar of the shirt folded over the lapels of the jacket.

that's if you wanna show chest fuzz.

but i'd make some changes.... (aside from the length issues) I'd leave the jacket unbottoned, go with a pink shirt, unbutton the top button, and go with black loafers.

and is it me or is there only one button on that jacket?

I was talking about for the ladies. my post was directed to toothgirl86 (who apparently went through 85 different screen names before settling on this one 😉)

Sure that outfit's ok for dudes, but I'm a girrrrl.

Toothgirl, I think lemoncurry is right on this. Ever see that episode of Seinfield where they debate whether the top button is optional? But if you're really worried, put on the shirt + suit and get opinions from an honest friend.

Take this from a chick who used to interview with IBankers (when i was playing around with the idea of finance), take b/t $100-150 to macy's/ Nordstrom Rack and get a nice 2 piece suit. they always have ~$99 sales, featuring Anne/Calvin Kline, Jones NY, Tahari. for this price, you'll great something really crisp. If your bottom heavy like me, and smaller on top, may want to go with your Ann Taylor and J Crew, more expensive, but you'll be able to buy separate matching pieces....nonetheless, start with Macys, its for EVERYBODY!!!

I've seen the girls do both, and they both look great. I'm partial to the top-unbuttoned shirt, though. Looks much more... powerful...? Or something.

[from a girl's perspective] When shopping for suits, I went to almost every store that sells them. I ended up liking the one I found on sale at Marshalls ($50) the best because of its fit and style--navy pinstripe Liz Claiborne suit that was very flattering and was definitely NOT polyester. I never thought I'd say it, but more expensive isn't necessarily better!

Thanks guys.

My list so far:

Macy's
Marshalls
Ann Taylor/Ann Taylor Loft
possibly Nordstroms & Jcpenney

It's pretty hit or miss, but I got my suit (Nine West) a year ago at TJ Maxx for ~$70. It's black with a thin pinstripe and very professional looking. I'd say I was one of the better dressed at my interview. I went with pants, but if you go with a skirt suit, be sure that it's long enough and that you wear pantyhose with it! There was a girl at my Creighton interview without hose but in their bulletin their dress code specifies that students wear professional looking clothes... "and appropriate hosiery." 😱 Anyway, good luck finding a suit 🙂

just a quick question for you guys.
I have a black skirt suit, but still need to get a pair of shoes. Would just simple black shoes be the best? which one do you recommend, pointy-toe or round?

Might as well throw out some nicer stores for those with a bigger budget

Sak's Fifth Avenue has some nicer selection...sophisticated Zegna, traditional Armani, and Hickey Freeman's quite nice too.

The Hugo Boss store has lots of nice looks for the up and coming professional. Nice european cuts. Costs a good deal less than the above brands too.

You can't go wrong with black shoes. As for pointy vs. round, it would depend on the look of the dress and your preference.

i dont like pointy or round. pointy looks semi-painful, and i think gives the look of arrogance. round i think is too common......its classic, but might be considered old-fashioned and a more innocent/timid look in some eyes. i'm a fan of that rounded-edge, square-toed look. at least for guys, its a nice, clean style, but still exudes a masculine presence (confident, not cocky).

whoa, i just blacked out there. did i just give fashion tips? i need a beer and the OSU/Mich game, STAT.

If you can't figure out how to buy a suit without the help of SDN, you don't deserve acceptance into dental school.

I can't wait until the day when you're all established, wealthy dentists, and you log back on to SDN to ask, "I want to buy a sports car... What should I buy?"
