If you want to simply volunteer in a lab, then just email the PIs in the labs you want to join. Express your interest in their work and perhaps your plan for the future. Many labs are willing to have people come in and help out for free... hard to turn that down, certain circumstances might lead to that, but the worst that could happen is them saying that they are not considering anyone at the moment.
