Ive read a lot of posts on here and have seen some people with pretty stellar resumes that are not getting in. This is discouraging for me because mine, as of now, is not great to say the least. I'm still a few semesters away from applying so Im hopeful I can get my GPA up however, the upcoming semesters are going to consist of the dreaded Orgo and Physics (I suck at Trig and Im not looking forward to it).
Heres what my resume looks as of now. My overall GPA is a 3.15 and my sGPA not much better at a 3.2. The thing that killed my GPA was a ridiculous D in an online history course, this was before I decided on Medical School. Not to make excuses but at the time I was going through a nasty break up, where I moved out the house my ex and I had together and this was in the middle of the semester. It was out of site out of mind and I was scrambling to find a place to live. Im going to look to see if there is a way not to remove it from my transcript, but to get it so it does not affect my GPA. Before that D I had a 3.7.
Other than that, the only poor grades I have are in Calculus with a C and a Political Science course also with a C. Im horrible at Math and the poli sci class was painfully boring and we were only graded on Mid-term and Final. Again, not making excuses thats just the way it went for me.
I should mention I am 29 years old and did not start going to school until I was 26. I have worked as an ED tech for 2+ years, I am currently working as an ED Scribe, and I am a volunteer Fire Fighter that also does the volunteer EMS side of the department. Prior to school I worked in construction for 10 years where I worked up to sub-contracting jobs and had several people working for me. I fell in love with health care when I got my EMT so I could volunteer and decided to pursue medicine.
Does anyone have suggestions on which schools I should apply to when the time comes? Im all for DO school as well as they seem to be more lenient with non-traditonal students. Like I said, I am going to work less this semester so I can pull my GPA up as much as possible although this will tough financially as I have a mortgage and all that jazz. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
