I am applying to residency in a couple of months, and over my third year clinicals I became very close with a psychologist that worked at the hospital of my rotation site, and she is very involved in the residency and application process for residents at this hospital. As students we had to choose patients to do home visits with, and she attended them with us (mostly social type visits). I also worked with her on sponsoring a couple of families in need during my rotations and we built a really great relationship. I think she would write me a killer LOR, but I am not sure how appropriate it is to have a non MD/DO write a letter that I will send to residencies (but I am applying to psychiatry- so they may value a letter from a psychologist).
Obviously if a residency specifies the letter types (ie- 2 psychiatrists, 1 Family medicine) I will not add this letter. But if they have those requirements and also (for instance) have a maximum of 4 letters, I could add the PhD letter in addition to the 3 physician letters.
What is the consensus? Worth it? Thanks in advance!
