Has anyone successfully managed to get a letter of recommendation from a physician without having to shadow? How does it look at the time of interview? Also, has anyone been asked if you had to shadow for the LOR? Just wondering because I did manage to get one and I think I should prepare if such questions do come up during interviews.

I got my LOR through a DO my sister worked with in the ED. We set up a time when I could "shadow" him. I was planning to stay with him for at least a half-shift, but when I got there the ED was basically empty (2 pts in a small rural ED). We talked for about and hour and he offered to demonstrate OMM for me. All together I think I stayed there about 1 1/2 hrs. He basically got my background info so he could, in his words "make it sound like he knew me" in my LOR...

I interviewed at 3 DO schools and only 1 asked me about my shadowing experience. I think they asked something general like "what was it like"... so not too bad...

The whole purpose to shadowing is to give you some idea of what the physician's day is really like... if you work in a clinical setting or have a doc that you feel comfortable asking questions to, then you can get some idea...

Good luck!

okay, i should have read this thread before i made my frantic post above. thaks, jmcarpenter, for your insight. okay, now i'm also wondering if osteopathic schools would be at all okay with shadowing an m.d. who does rural medicine. that, i can definitely do this summer.

many are fine with an MD letter as well

i got a LOR from my pcp (DO) who i had been seeing only for a week. I was glad to see that he was willin to supply one, but of course later, i shadowed him for his entire shift (8hrs). It was really good experience. What was most surprising was that he used OMM alot! and patients were actually requesting it.
