Hey guys,

I'm sure you've heard this one before. I asked one of my attendings for a LOR over 6 months ago and I checked with my school and they told me they had not received anything. So, I contact the hospital, and they say he's moved across the country and they do not have any contact info for me. I looked this attending up, and I found a number. Is it appropriate for me to call the number (could be a direct line) and ask him for the LOR? I feel like hes going to pick up the phone and be like uhhh who are you exactly? We got along fine during the rotation but >6 months later I don't know if he will remember. What do you guys suggest I do? Chalk it up to a loss, find other LORs or call this guy and try to get it?

Thanks

Can't hurt to try. If he says that he doesn't really remember you (or your request) then take it as a lost opportunity and move on. If you say your name and he recognizes it, then ask him if he can still write you a STRONG rec letter. if he says yes, consider going for it. Just because you get it doesn't mean you have to use it (if you find others that are more recent and you know will be written well).

Do you think its cool if I just call him directly? pretty much my only option at this point... and yes i had a feeling he was going to write me a strong LOR, thats why I'm even asking

If you found the work number for them, call them. If you found a personal number via stalking, let it go

Can't hurt to call him at his available number, regardless of whether it's his personal number or not.

I just google'd him and found a number listed, it seems to be a personal number bc it still has the area code of my hometown but hes in a completely different state

if he's working at another school you should be able to find his email on that website...
