Hey everybody I had a question regarding number of LORs typically sent. I know most med schools ask for like one from a physician, science prof, and non-science prof, but if you send say 1 more letter from like a coach or boss would that be a problem at all? Any opinions on whether you could see this possibly being beneficial because it is from the perspective of a person other then what med schools typically see?

Any opinions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

If your UG has a premed/prehealth committee then their letter basically covers you for all the others. A physician letter isn't required or recommended unless they're your PI or you have extensive experience working alongside them (read: not just shadowing). Some schools do require additional letters from people who know you outside academics. To be safe I would go with: 2 science, 1 non-science, and 1 "personal qualities" letter from PI/volunteer coordinator/supervisor/etc. Maybe add another personal qualities letter if you want....Anything over 4 individual letters is overkill though IMO.

. Yea, i think i might have my boss write me one and be my 4th letter. I have been the front room supervisor of my work for the last couple years, so i feel like a letter from my boss may be beneficial. Thank you for the advice.'

Also, around when is the best time to send in LORs?

Go to the sites of the med schools you want to apply and look at their requirements.

Diversity of letters is good.
