Quick Question: I just realized I need to submit letters to VSAS to apply for aways. I'm trying to decide whether or not to have my letter writer submit the letter to me or to my school to submit it directly to VSAS (w/o me being able to see it). How do PDs feel about a LOR being viewable by the student? I'm a bit confused about this, and I know that when I was applying to medical school, being able to view the LOR pretty much made it useless to admissions.

I had about half my letters non-confidential when applying to medical school. Didn't seem to make a difference. There was one letter that I am very glad I didn't make confidential tho. He didn't write me a bad letter, but he put in one of those lines that just makes you cringe.

I know the contents of all of my LORs despite never opening them. I'm 100% positive that they are all awesome and on stand-by for VSAS / ERAS deployment.

@Giovanotto, I don't know how this VSAS thing works yet. But, a few things that I want to have on file right now are the AMA Immunization stuff uploaded, school transcript uploaded, personal statement ready, excellent LORs from my preceptors, and direct cell phone access to my letter writers in case that I need to bug them about uploading a certain LOR to VSAS or the school within an hour notice.

Rule of LOR:
1. Make it confidential.
2. Make it confidential.

If you are that inclined, have the letter writer send you a copy also and decide to use it or not.

What specialty are you applying to? I don't remember a single site that I applied to that required an LOR for VSAS

There is wide discussion about this. The against is that if you dont waive your right you don’t trust the person writing your letter, and what is behind this mistrust?
