So I've been working in a research lab for a year now and I just found out the person who was going to write my LOR is leaving the lab.

He's a postdoc and told me he would be fine writing my LOR. I also searched around and found out that it's perfectly alright to have a postdoc write your LOR.

I will be applying next summer and he is leaving this summer. Is it alright to get a letter from him a year after he's left my university? Should I ask if he would be willing to write the letter before he leaves?

Thanks for the help!

This topic has been covered numerous times by members as well as some of our Adcom contributors. Ask for it now so that they are able to write it with the freshest memory of you and your work, there is absolutely no point to wait a year when they may have forgotten details about you and when you might not be able to contact them effectively or they may be too busy to help you.

One of the professors I was going to have write for me got fired and he's bigger about it and might not write for me now. It sucks =P
