So I'm an MS3 and just asked an IM program director to write me a letter of recommendation. He accepted the request. My question is, is it too early? How do I get around the requirement that it has to be dated after July 1st??? (not sure if this is true... just what I gathered from the forums). Assume this is July 1st 4th year right? Also, the PD has agreed to send the letter to me directly! I didn't include a cover sheet from ERAS - don't see a point as I don't have my ID number, yet. I just gave him my CV so no waiver to read it or anything. Any advise? Am I doing this correctly?

Here's what I would do if I were in your situation.

Go to your school's ERAS designated person and ask them what to do. Every school is different. Technically your ERAS ID number needs to be in the letter somewhere (Same as your AMCAS ID number).

If you don't ask your school here's what I would then do. If he is going to write the letter now, have him save it on his computer or in your file for next year (I don't know about the date thing). You will need to find out what your school requires in terms of getting LORs sent to the ERAS designated person at your school. My school required the cover sheet and the letter sent directly from the person writing the letter. As in, we couldn't turn the letter in ourselves. You will want to waive your right to see the letter and that is on the ERAS cover sheet (it just looks better). If you see the letter after your waived your right, that's an ethics debate.

I personally would ask them if they would please jot down some notes now, and that you will get back in touch with them when it is the appropriate time. You don't want a PD to send you the letter directly, and you absolutely need to include it with an ERAS cover letter waiving your right to read it. You in fact do already have an ID number -- it will be the same one you had when you took the MCAT, if you can dig that one up. But no, do not take custody of the letter and don't get a letter that doesn't have a waiver.
