If they have the same last name as you, that will look bad and reduce the credibility of the reference.

Also, if you plan to have a committee letter drafted for your application, you should check with your school.

My school has a strict policy where the health advisory committee doesn't look at a LOR from a family member/relative.

nepotism can hurt you. I suggest shadowing a friend of your relative for a better appearance.

I think UMD specifically won't accept a LOR of a family member.
