I am a DS1 and am ordering my first set of loupes. I am going with the Q-Optic titanium sport frames because they had a smaller size frame option that fit my face well and was really comfortable.

Our professors recommended starting with 2.5 but most of the older students I have talked with (and through reading through these forums) recommeded starting with more magnification.

After trying them on today at a loupe fair I immediately knew I wanted more than 2.5. I tried on the 3.0s and like them and decided it was between 2.5 and 3.5 so it would be a good start.

Now after reading more on these forums I am wishing I had sat down and compared the 3.0 and 3.5s more carefully.

Any opinions out there about jumping to the 3.5 or staying with the 3.0? (I also did the light combo due to everyone recommending it and getting a much better deal than buying a light later)

I love my 3.5x's, but just pick whichever you feel more comfortable with. When you're out and working, it's not like you won't be able to buy another pair 🙂

I would get the 3.5's. theres going to be a learning curve with loupes period, so you might as well get the higher mag if you are considering it, rather than have to adjust to more magnification later...

I owned 2.5x and moved up to 3.8x. I would probably say that a smaller jump than 2.5 to 3.5 probably wouldn't really make that much of a difference. There is definitely a learning curve to using these that probably depends on how long you've been using 2.5x.

Having said that though, I can see my preps better and generally get cleaner margins, etc.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I am going to call the Q-optic rep and try to get the 3.5s.
