Loyola Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wow, us Loyola peeps are really representin' on SDN! 😀

I think classes start at the end of July/beginning of August, but we have an orientation week before that, so we need to be there in July.

Gosh, it just keep hitting me- it's really happening. We're gonna be doctors! 😱

By the way, who's looking for a roommate? I promise I'm not a psycho! 😉 (muahahaha)

I'm looking for a roomate, but it's not for sure yet...

Prefer: male, non-smoker, non-drinker, non-psycho, non-stay up all night, having tons of loud people over, driving me crazy, and just a good person.

Post your sex/age...

OH! And you must be clean - as in cleaning up after yourself and bathe at least every other day... MUST bathe after using the amazing gym! haha!!!

Am I the only one that hasn't received my letter yet? 🙁
The admissions office told me it was mailed Wed, Dec 17th... shouldn't it have reached Michigan by now? Is anyone else experiencing mail delays/ or has anyone else not received word yet? I am leaving for the holidays and I would really like to know about my status before I'm gone for a week! Help!!!

I'd call them. Tell them that you haven't gotten it and that you're leaving. They're typically pretty accomodating. Good luck!

If it doesn't come tomorrow, definitely call...

Did anyone not get accepted? Only accepted people have posted so far. If anyone didn't get in, I wish you luck with your others.

well, no mail today, and no mail tomorrow and no mail on Friday.. then I'm leaving Saturday to go out of town for a week... guess I'll have to call Loyola sometime after I get back and tell them the letter they claimed was sent never actually reached me. What a bummer - and I was hoping this would be an early Christmas present! 🙁 Oh well... (sigh)

bumpity bump bump

Ok, I've read that Loyola invites people to interview via phone... I haven't been at my school residence, my contact phone #, for the last couple weeks so I may have missed such an invite. Do they send out a letter or email in addition to the phone call? I'm going to call them tomorrow to find out if what I can, but if anyone can answer my question that would be help me know if I might have missed them trying to contact me.

I got a call and after I scheduled my interview, I received an interview packet. I thought I saw on the interview thread that people got emails. I'm sure they would try multiple means to get a hold of you, but call anyway just to make sure.

Ok, so this is weird. I just got back from a week out of town and still no word from Loyola. I've called them twice now and both times they've said, "well, if it doesn't get there in a week, let us know and we'll send another copy." I called them yesterday and they are re-sending my decision letter. I thought, darn, I'll have to wait another 3-4 days!! How agonizing! Then, out of the blue, I received an e-mail from my health professions advisor congratulating me on my Loyola acceptance! Yahoo!!! I'm so excited and relieved! I know that Loyola is my first choice after the phenomenal interview experience I had there, and now this solidifies the fact that attending there is a real possibility! I just wanted to share the great news with you all since you've all been so supportive- and from the sound of it, there are more than a handful of potential classmates on this forum🙂 So, congrats to everyone and (fingers crossed) see you next fall!

P.S. Since I haven't actually received the paper acceptance, can anyone tell me how long we have to respond? With everything so messed up, I want to be sure that I'm not missing any deadlines! Thanks in advance for any insight!

Congratulations! I'll find out in January. Loyola is awesome.

You have a couple of weeks. I got my letter on Dec. 22 and it is due back on Jan 7th. CONGRATS!!!! Loyola rocks!

hmmm . . . to rescue the thread.

when I was reading the brochures, it seemed like a number of the students were really into pursuing careers service in 3rd world countries/inner cities. and like 50% of the class goes on the summer trip. is seems a much greater percentage than other schools do charity healthcare.

is this a main reason some of you decided to apply/choose loyola?

I got the impression it was more the 50% that do the service trip. I just really felt like Loyola gave a s*** about their students and the world in general. My interviewer, who was awesome, raved about the summer trips. What a cool place, I know I'm going to be happy there. All I have to say is: Ad Majorum Dei Gloriam.

Do any of you guys know how full the class is?
Or if Loyola stops interviewing?

Thanks.

I agree with Matthew...I really felt like Loyola actually cares about their students. My interviewers actually took my file home with them and read over it. It just seems like a place that if you have a problem, people will try to help you. That's more important to me then a "top 5" medical school. Students at Loyola have time to have fun, exercise, get to know each other, and don't feel the pressure of competing against each other. That's what attracted me.

I do know that after they fill their quota of "acceptances" they continue to interview applicants "for the waiting list" only. I don't know if they have reached that point yet. But I'm sure that if you call, someone will answer that question for you.

I hope that helps

Strange question alert🙂:

Is anyone else who has been accepted to Loyola married? My husband and I have been looking at housing near the med school, to get a feel for what the cost of living will likely pan out to be, and it's looking a little scary!

Since I won't have a roommate to offset the cost (another med student for instance), the cost of living looks pretty high. I just wondered if any other married students, or students planning on living alone, were concerned about this...

Thanks all!

Hi there-

I am also attending Loyola next year. I'm not married, but am close to it (will be by the end of school). My girlfriend and I currently live on the Northern side of Chicago...however this summer we plan to move close to Loyola, in order to be close to my school. I have heard from a number of students that no one lives in Maywood, but instead everyone lives in Oak Park. Ideally I would love to live within walking distance to Loyola, however I have yet to visit Oak Park, and don't know if walking distance is even possible. But yeah, I'm from Wisconsin and I fully agree that the housing (esp. without a roommate) in the Loyola area costs a pretty penny. Between my girlfriend and I, we know a couple of current Loyola students, I plan on asking them for advice and guidence. I think in the end we're going to just have to "suck it up" and pay the high cost of living. My ideal situation would be as follows:

1) Close to Loyola
2) Quiet/Safe area
3) One/Two bedroom apartment (second bedroom = study room)
4) Reasonable price

Right now I'm fairly clueless on where to start looking. So I'll make some phone calls and maybe take a trip out to Oak Park to just get a feel for what it feels like. Sorry, I guess I've just rambled without being much help at the moment.

Chuck Deli,

It sounds as though you and your gf are in very much the same predicament my husband and I are in. Ironically, we are looking for the exact housing features that you enumerated😛

If it helps, Loyola has an Apartment Gazette that they post online every semester to help students find housing. Landlords submit leasing/rental information to the school specifically for the purpose of providing students with "affordable" housing relatively close (though not necessarily within walking distance) to the school. From what I've heard, some of the postings are pretty affordable, but as a disclaimer, the rental prices I've heard quoted were probably per person (in a 2 person living situation). The Gazette for Spring 2004 is not yet up and running, but if you want to check for it periodically, here's the link:

http://www.meddean.luc.edu/templates/ssom/studres/aptgazette/search.cfm

In the meantime, I guess the best we can do is research typical listings in the Oak Park area to get some idea of cost. I agree - in the end, it will probably come down to sucking it up. The problem is, I have an acceptance at my state school as well, and although Loyola is far and away my first choice, tuition and housing are making it a little more difficult to turn down a much more affordable situation closer to home 🙁

Why oh why does money get in the way of everything!!!😕

The impression I got from my tour guide was that no one lives w/ in walking distance of Loyola. Most of the students live in Forest/Oak Park and drive to school where there is an ample garage not 100 yards from the Stritch building. Also keep in mind that cost of living around Loyola is high, but not exorbitant by any means. It's not like living in the city, or in New York or the Bay area or some place like that.

Hope to see you all next year,

Matt

Yeah, Me Too.

I stayed with a student host when I interviewed who lived in the Riverside/N. Riverside area. He lived in a townhouse about 5-10 minutes from campus. You married peeps might want to check out that area (Riverside) too. It was quiet, seemed very safe (they usually didn't even lock their door!), and I think that rent was a little cheaper. I just thought I'd pass the info to you guys. I would personally rather live in the more bustling forest park area, but Riverside was definitely a nice, quiet neighborhood.

I might also suggest you expand your search out further from Loyola. My future roomate lives in Brookfield now (approx. 20 min drive from the school) and he has a massive one bedroom for like 750 a month. 750 doesn't sound cheap but we're talking about a huge one bedroom appt. For whatever this is worth, all of the students I met seemed alot happier to be at Stritch then they were worried about their rent expenses.

I interviewed there yesterday and the Dean said there were still open slots for the 2008 class. She also said that once all the open slots were taken they continue to interview and put people into alternate slots. I have a friend who is a 2nd year there and she was interviewed in March, put on the alternate list, and accepted in May. I don't know if that is representative, but it sure should give you some hope!

Just out of curiosity...

Is there anyone planning on attending Loyola who turned down their state school acceptance (and subsequently, in-state tuition) to do so? This is the decision I am facing and I'm having a terrible time deciding which school I'd be happier at, and if being happier at Loyola (it's hard to estimate if this would be marginal or significant) is worth paying twice as much in tuition every year...

Is anyone else struggling with this predicament?😕

If so, how are you coming to a resolution?? HELP!

My tour guide hinted that he had been accepted at both cheaper schools and more prestigious schools and he chose Loyola. I think even if I get accepted to my state school I'll go to Stritch.

I am struggling with this as well...I really feel I would be happier at Loyola than my state school CU or Tufts. I am worried about match stats and paying that much for a school that is not ranked...for whatever reasons. I know it might sound bad, but if I am going to pay that much money I want it to be worth it on match day... but I would like to be happy too. Might not matter though if I dont get into another school.

I also think it says a lot about the quality of Loyola that people even have this struggle.

Also, for housing, Loyola SAS site has links to real estate listings. Just go to current students, student web sites, SAS.

Does anyone know Loyola's rank.. i can't seem to find out.. i got an acceptance and will probably turn down my state school to go there...

Quote from the second page of this thread....

University of Illinois, Rush, Loyola, and Finch don't respond to rankings. If you check the U.S. News and World Report Webpage, click on methodology or details about the rankings or whatever. There should come a point where you can click on individual schools. For the schools that fill out the surveys, U.S. News gives their statistics... if a school doesn't reply to the rankings, the webpage will read, "This school did not return U.S. New Surveys," or something like that. I think out of the 125 medical schools, 117 of them filled the surveys out.

But what does that mean really? I didnt see anything there that I thought was cause for concern...I wonder why they don't respond...is it that they just dont care about rankings or that they don't want to be ranked too low. Very confusing, but to be honest, I had such a good interview experience there that I really don't care.

Yes! I got an interview invite for Loyola today. I'll be there on the 31st! Good luck with all you people going to comittee!

I have a question for the Illinois people, who would pick Loyola over UIC? I'm debating because $20000 more a year does add up and they are almost located in the same city except one you can take the train to easily and the other you can't.

UIC's instate tuition is about $22,500 and Loyola's tuition is about $33,000, roughly a $10,000 difference. UIC tends to quote their tuition by semester and it can throw people off. I got these numbers from their financial aid offices as an estimate of next year's tuition, but you can look up last year's numbers on the AAMC Tuition and Student Fees webpage:

https://services.aamc.org/tsf/TSF_Report/select.cfm?year_of_study=2004

I was looking at the estimated total expenses each school quotes and the amount for Loyola is around $20000 more than UIC.

Sorry for the mixup. In terms of the total expenses, it seems to me that UIC has a low estimate of living expenses ($12,000) while Loyola has a high estimate ($17,500). In making your own budget, I would think that most people would actually spend some amount in between. The cost of living in Chicago and Oak Park probably aren't that different, except that there is the assumption that you can get by without a car at UIC and can't at Loyola.

Loyola

2003-2004 Tuition: $32,800
2003-2004 Student Budget (Approximation)
? Microscope Rental $104
? Fees $490
? Housing/Utilities/Food $10,334
? Books/Supplies $2,438
? Hospital Insurance (approx) $946
? Disability Insurance $210
? Personal $1,028
? Transportation $1,950

UIC would still be at least $15000 less a year and in the $22,500 quote, this includes health insurance and fees. I saw the living expenses quote above for Loyola was actually less than UIC at $10,334. $12000 at UIC would probably be more than enough.

Thanks for breaking down the numbers for me. I can see how the fees really add up at Loyola. I had kind of ignored them assuming that they would be comparable between schools.

Good luck making your decision!

I got accepted at Loyola back in mid-October. It is a great school, especially if you plan on remaining in Chicago to practice medicine.

The lack of ranking doesn't matter because Loyola would never be ranked in the top 50 Research rankings. There's little NIH grants there. But clinical research exists for those interested. Take a look at a match list to understand where graduates go next.

I thought about the UIC/Loyola comparison. But looking at the student body at each, the facilities, and the overall feel of the education I'll receive, the financial difference became inconsequential. Boys and girls, this is FOUR years of your life. Four prime years of your life. I feel like investing in my happiness. You can manipulate numbers all day and keep haggling about it. Ask yourself: where do you want to go? Where did it feel right?

About the numbers (Let's just call living expenses a wash since you will probably live the same standard of living...you will probably need a car at both schools, since if you like having fun, you won't want to be living near UIC or be a slave to the CTA. But the car argument is a personal thing.) Let's also call books/supplies/personal a wash too. I think this is fair.

There is not a 20,000 a year difference.

UIC Tuition/Fees: $22,774 (pisses me off our state school is so expensive)

Loyola Tuition/Fees: $35,500 (approx.)

Difference: ~$13,000 ($52,000 total)

But let's take this to a new level. Let's say you are a big work-out fanatic like me. I drop $1,000 a year on gym membership. If at UIC, this will still occur. If at Loyola, the sweet gym is included. There are differences in parking costs per semester between the schools. You need to look at your personal situation and see the day-to-day financial comparison. It's not going to make up the difference, but it puts a small dent in it.

For me, although I may not attend Loyola, the choice between Loyola and UIC is easy. $50,000 for my happiness over 4 years. I'm okay driving a 3 series instead of a 5 series later in life to be where I want to be for 4 years.

You just got to figure out what's important to you. Who knows, maybe financial aid packages will surprise us.

bump? or am i beating a dead horse?

Has anyone had a recent interview with Loyola? I just received an invite yesterday and I was wondering how full their class is. Are they at the point of interviewing for their waitlist?

bittersweet. I belive someone was already told they were interviewing for the alternate list. Check out the most recent interview feedback because I think it says it there.

I'm leaning towards loyola...anyone have a link for their match list?? And does anyone know if most of loyola's patients are private insurance patients (like it seems to be?) We could really use some input from a fourth year on their clinical experiences....

I am the bump master.

Okay, so I've been wavering between SLU and Loyola, and now I think I've decided-Loyola it is! State school isn't even an option for me cause I bombed the interview (1st interview jitters😱 )

Anyway, I can't wait to start!!! All the students and professors were so awesome, their gym is sweet, and I would absolutely love to go on one of those immersion mission trips after first year.

I hope to see you all this July! Now I've just got to find a place to live in chi-town.

P.S. I'd like to give a shot out to the bumpmaster for keeping this thread alive! 😎

I called Loyola and they gave me a copy of their match list. Not too shabby, they have a lot of good matches with a wide variety of specialties.

Give them a call- They are more than willing to help out.

Dr.Bodacious: Just curious, have you heard from Loyola after your interview?

I'm applying to medical school next fall and Loyola is my #1 pick.
My stats are 3.5 and 32 mcat score. I was wondering if you guys would post your stats so I could see if I have a chance?
