Dr.Bodacious: Just curious, have you heard from Loyola after your interview?

Yes, I got a letter recently saying that I'm an alternate. That's the best I could've hoped for because the class was already full.

Whoo-hoo Loyola, here we come! (Barring a disasterous financial aid package). Anyone else heading to Chicago for the first time? When is everyone gonna start looking for housing?

Congrats!! I'm still planning on Loyola and if 2 other schoold don't pull through, I will start looking for housing asap. So, that's around April.

Hi, I'm heading to Chicago one way or the other. Loyola's match list really good for EM in the Chicago area. This is one of my favorites so that is a good sign.

I'm living with a couple of golf pros who already work in Chicago. One of them is going to check out some appts that look really nice and very affordable (i.e. 425/person for a 3BR) that are in Hinsdale. The main thing I want to know is how far away that is from the school. If it looks like a good deal, I'll post the details for my fellow Stritchers.

Matt

Thanks Matt, def. keep us up to date....I'm thinking April or May, but maybe sooner, after all classes start in July!

I think Loyola students may very well be THE happiest students!

<Gasp>

Peterock in Chicago? We'll just have to wait and see....
Just got the call... apparently they interview LATE.

😀 😀 😀

Hey all,

For everyone who's going to Loyola for sure and has been working on compiling financial aid stuff, I need some help:

For the online Stritch FAA (Financial Aid Application), I have questions about 2 of the bulleted main sections.

1) For "previous schools", is this section just designed for transfer students, or are we supposed to list our undergrad institution(s) here?

2) For "previous aid" information, I received federal direct subsidized and unsubsidized loans in undergrad (all 4 years). Are these the same as Stafford Loans? Also, I am confused about whether we are supposed to list sources of aid from undergrad in the "previous aid" section or if this section is just designed for use by 2nd, 3rd and 4th years who have received "previous aid" in medical school?

I will likely call Financial Aid tomorrow, but I wondered if anyone else knew the answers to these questions . Also, is the FAA due tomorrow (march 1st) or march 31st? I've seen both listed in different places on the financial aid website and in the information they've sent.

ALSO, has anyone received any informational mailings lately from Stritch? I've been receiving immunization records, etc. from other schools I was accepted at, but haven't heard anything from Stritch lately. Have I missed something??

THANKS EVERYONE!!

I can't help ya with the fin aid questions. However, I can comment that I sent in all my fin aid stuff, and they said that as long as all the info is in by the proper deadlines, there's no "early bird" scholarships, or extra money.

I also haven't received anything from Loyola (since the fin. aid package)...my next mission is within the next month to begin a more intensive housing search. I've looked into it already, but there's plenty of nice places to live on the Western side of Chicago, so I'm not in a big rush.

Hope this helps-- this is what I got when I called with similar questions
1- PREVIOUS SCHOOLS: everyone is supposed to list the undergraduate institutions you attended in this section (not just transfers)
2- PREVIOUS AID: Federal Direct Loans are the same as Stafford, but if you scroll down the entry list next to "Program" there is an option that says "Direct Loan". Pick that one.

Mailing-- I haven't received any mailings yet (from any schools, including Loyola) so I wouldn't worry yet. They probably wait till the spring when most of the class has been accepted.

I have a question....anyone know much about Oak Park?

What did the 5 fingers say to the face?

BUMP!

I'm Rick James blitch.

Hey guys,

Are you sure that Loyola's class is full now? I called them last week and they said I was still under review. Is that code for "too late buddy!"

I think I remember the Dean saying that they review app's even after the class is full for spots on the alternate list.

On another note, I've been accepted to Pitt and am anxious as to what decision to make. Any other peeps here in the same or similar Loyola/Pitt quandry?

Hey everyone, I have already been accepted to Loyola and sent in the letter to hold my place a couple months ago, but recently they sent me info on their post-bacc program! Did any of you receive this too? I guess it's just a mix up. My paranoid self just gets a little worried when I think I'm accepted and they send me something like this!

Don't worry I recieved one too.

congrats to all who've been accepted! i'm an M1 at loyola, and in a fit of procrastination (we have our pulmonary/renal/acid-base exam on monday), i thought i'd check out sdn. if you have questions on anything, i'd be more than happy to help. it's funny to read all of this, having gone through the same things last year. i went through the same stuff - i picked loyola over both rush and uic, and even though i'm looking at some serious debt, i couldn't have made a better decision. our students really are as happy as they tell you, and we have an amazing faculty and staff at school. it's not just about class - you're in clinics with a physician mentor, rounding with a 3rd year, learning the physical and history, going to social events, getting involved in the community, and enjoying chicago from the very beginning. and as for class, i challenge you to find a school with LESS class time than we do (at first, anyway 😉 ) and even if you're on the waitlist, don't give up hope. cheers and good luck!

Hey badgergirl,

Thanks for posting and offering your help. I have a question about housing.

Where do most of the people you know live and how soon do you recommend looking for apartments?

Thanks!
Laurie

PS Can I guess from your username that you are a Wisconsin grad?

i just got a call yesterday from my mom that loyola called my house to schedule an interview!!!!! AHHHHH!! :horns: they've been my first choice all along, and i had kind of given myself over to the fact that i might not ever hear from them. i'm super excited for the interview, its on tuesday, EEEEEK. haha, but i've had 5 interviews already, and i feel super prepared and ready to do dis. i heard on the interview feedback that they're only giving out waitlists though, but i'm cool with that! i'll probably be in chicago anyways and it would be easy to take the acceptance (if i get it 😀) yippee!

I got the grad program letter too. I was sooooo freaked out that I was going to call on Monday to make sure my acceptance was ok.

Badgergirl... check out this website:

www.badgerbadgerbadger.com

It's pretty funny!

I'm also worried about when to satrt looking for housing. Any info would be wonderful!

I got the post-bacc thing too. There must be some wires crossed up there between the med school and the university. Badgergirl's post was edifying, especially since you can count me into that massive debt club.

Hey Badgergirl- I'm glad you are happy at Loyola 😉

hi PluckyDuk8 😉 how's studying going?

as far as I can tell, the majority of us live in Oak Park, Forest Park, River Forest, La Grange, or downtown (yes, it's feasible), and then a smaller contingent in places like Elmhurst, Riverside, Westchester, Berwyn, and so on. there are all sorts of apartment-finding guides that can help you.

http://www.oakparkapartments.com/
Chicago Tribune

oak park and forest park seem to be the most popular simply because that's where everyone is already, if that makes sense. if you want a roommate, sign up to get that list they send out. a good chunk of people seem to move downtown (especially to Lincoln Park and Wrigleyville) during the third year since your rotations are all over the city, and you don't have to come to school so often. maybe PluckyDuk8 would be an even better resource for questions about renting, since she did a lot more looking around than i did (although we both ended up in oak park).

LaurieB - i am very much a UW grad - go bucky!!
AlreadyInDebt - that website is hysterical  gotta love the mushrooms

Got some answers from a really cool 2nd yr. Looks like he put a lot of effort into this so much thanks to him... Also thanks to the person in another thread that came up with these questions...

1. How many hours of lecture/day?
As a first year, not usually more than 2. As a second year, the average is between 2 and 3, with some days of 4. The point, though, is that the curriculum definitely balances out lecture with small groups. This is not the "old school" 9-5 lecture days or anything like that.

2.What is the 3rd year like and how is it structured?:
Third year has few lectures, as it is the year you start doing your rotations. There are 6 required rotations (12 weeks of Internal Medicine, 12 weeks of Surgery, 6 weeks of Pediatrics, 6 weeks of OB/GYN, 6 weeks of Psychiatry, and 6 weeks of Family Medicine). There are 16 different "tracks" that we can do these rotations in, meaning not all of us are doing the same thing at the same time.

-How are the rotations structured? What is your role on
the wards? Do you have a clear role? Do you get your "hands dirty" a lot, or is it a lot of shadowing?

For this question, I guess it depends on what rotation you're on. The role often depends on your resident, but for the most part you are very involved in the patients' care. This means checking on them every day, working with the staff to create a treatment plan, learning invasive procedures, etc. Third and Fourth year are the years you learn what you like/dislike so you can make an educated career choice.

3.How are medical students protected from scut on the wards? I'm not quite sure how you define scut work. If you mean changing linens, doing bed-pan type stuff, I'm pretty sure that is someone else's job. However, taking vitals and being intimately involved in your patient's care should be a responsibility of every third year, as it is the best way to learn how to take care of a large number of conditions.

4.How much focus is put on prim. care in the clinical yrs. Well, like I said, you have 12 weeks of Internal Medicine (this is Cardiology, Renal, Pulmonary, etc), 6 weeks of Peds, and 6 weeks of Family. There are plenty of opportunities to experience the primary care environment, however, you will also be dealing with very seriously ill people in all of the rotations (especially Internal Medicine).

5.Loyola's avg board scores?
Quite honestly I don't know the exact number, but I do know for a fact that our scores are consistently above the national average and our passing rate is one of the highest in the country.

-do most people go to lecture?
Yes. That is one of the first things I noticed that was different when compared to other schools. I would guess the attendance is 90-95% for every class. Obviously there are times when you have something else going on you need to do, but I think that the majority of the students feel it is extremely valuable to go to class.

-Specifically, how does (or doesn't) a Loyola education prepare you and your classmates for STEP I? Starting this week we have review sessions run by our professors from different courses to highlight the main things that show up on the boards every year. We also have a full-time Education Specialist who works with any student to design a study schedule for them. Also, the professors are all instructed to write our test questions in formats that are similar to the boards, so we get used to answering those types of questions. The only areas that are slightly lacking are in Embryology and Biostatistics. These topics are covered in class, but are not separate courses, so most students by a Board Review book for them and seem to do just fine that way.

-and how much time off do you have to study for it?
We finish at the beginning of May, and we technically have three School-assigned weeks to study. Most people take an extra week from there and take the test in early June, before we have to start third year in July.

-Do EXAMS come in blocks or are they spread out like, one a week? Exams come in blocks, so they're at most every three weeks. Personally, I haven't had a test in 6 weeks. You won't take a test, say, in Path one week and a Pharm test the next. They integrate the questions into one test so as to minimize the stress (hopefully).

Boulder, sorry I didn't respond before. Thanks for the info.

Thats cool, I just wanted to bump it back up for people to see...

Just wanted to give another "shout-out" to the Badger fans! I just graduated from Madison in December, now I'm in Chicago waiting for Loyola to begin! This thread has been great! See ya all in July!

This thread is amazaing...it has proven to me what kind of people go to Stritch.

I am very excited about meeting everyone in July!!

What's going on people. Financial Aid stuff is due today, so I hope you have it all turned in. Does anyone know when we might hear from them again?

Hi, I am good for the deadline today however I have not sent in my SAR. I did FAFSA corrections on the web two Mondays ago and then again last Friday for the final correction. As of now, I still have not received a new SAR through email even for the correction a week and a half ago. This worries me a little bit since it said on the form that no aid will be processed until it is received. I am so ready to get these packets and choose a school (which is probably Loyola).

Who's working out with me every morning!?

Hey Kilroth,

I just followed the link from the first SAR email I got and I was able to access my latest SAR. Try that if you still have the original SAR email. I also called Loyola Today, and the financial Aid office said it would be ok to email them the SAR. I went to "print summary," clicked on the pdf version, saved it, and then sent it to Stritch. In my email to them, I asked them to reply and let me know for sure if the SAR in that form was acceptable, but I haven't heard back yet. Anyway, in a couple of weeks we should be able to see the financial damage!

Loyola does not start sending out fin aid packages until "the middle of April". Also, they send packages to returning students prior to new students....so you may be waiting a couple of weeks yet until you receive the fin aid package.

FYI, the package arrives via email, and is a link to a secure webpage. All fin aid stuff is online for Loyola.

As always, it sounds like I'm going to have some great classmates at Loyola. I love the fact that we're already working together!!! I look forward to meeting ya'll in a couple of months!

That didn't work for me but I called the number on the SAR and it said it takes 7-10 days after processing to get it. It's already been 5 so I am ok. Let me know if Loyola accepts that pdf file of the SAR. That would save me a lot of trouble. 🙂

I'm withdrawing next week or so. Do you have any advice on how I should do it? Telephone call? Letter? Letter following a telephone call? Of course, I've never done this before...😕

When i withdrew at MU they wanted me to either mail or fax something that I had signed so that they could put it in my file as an official withdrawl. A phone call where you say, "keep the change ya filthy animal" will not quite cut it.

Just wanted to say hi. I'm officially headed to Loyola as of tonight. I'm looking forward to meeting you all this fall.

Cheers,
Laurie

Hinsdale is about 30-40 mins from loyola. it depends on traffic on I290 which can be pretty bad
