Does anyone know if it is possible to get an apartment in Chicago and make the commute each day to Maywood for classes? Or do most people live in the sub urbs.

I don't attend Loyola but I live only 10 minutes away from there. I would recommend getting an apartment in the neighboring suburbs close to the school such as LaGrange Park, Westchester, Brookfield to name a few. Commuting to and from the big city is a real pain here in chicago. Traffic is horrible on the main highways especially in the morning.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth.

I was in Chicago during the summer and the city traffic was horrible. Down south, we expect tollways to be faster than regular highways since you are paying extra, but in Chicago, every major highway was in total gridlock at all times of the day. After my experience trying to navigate through the city, I would definitely live in the burbs.

I have a friend (actually, more of an acquaintance) that is an M2 at Loyola and lives in the city. He has no complaints.

As for the traffic, since you would be going away from the city, I doubt you would run into much trouble - at least in the morning. The inbound routes are the ones that would be packed at that time. Same deal in the evening - you would be going inbound when everyone else is leaving.

Go for it. Don't give up your chance to live in the city - it rocks.

I have lived in Chicago for about 6 years (4 for school and 2 for work.) When I drove out to Loyola for my interview, it took about 25 minutes. The Eisenhower (Int. 290) is the expressway you'd take coming from the city and it is probably the least congested expressway coming out of the city in the morning.

I live just north of downtown, so it isn't that bad of a commute. I plan to stay where I am, regardless of where I go in Chicago.

I go to Loyola U. for undergrad., and have gone to the medical center many times. If you live in the city, it really isn't that bad of a commute, but you probably don't want to live right near the medical center, because Maywood is not the safest area.

I'm considering the same thing...I work for a private ambulance company in Chicago and was bringing people to Hines Veterans Administration Hospital a lot...The 290 really sucks, at all random times of the day (i.e. not just at rush hour) and also when it doesn't make sense for inbound/outbound to be full or not full. The drive from Westside VA near UIC/Rush to Hines, even though it was only 9 miles, could take 30-45 minutes in parking lot traffic. Anyway, I still have a long while to figure out what I'm going to do.

I asked some Loyola students about living in Chicago when I interviewed, and they said that a bunch of people do it, so it's doable, but personally they wouldn't do it their first two years. They said that even one guy drives in from Highland Park (for those Chicagoans who knows where that is) but I think that's a bit crazy.
