LSU Shreveport
Pros
Cons
Tulane
Pros
Cons
Summary: I'm not sure what specialty I'll match into, which makes this very difficult, but I'd like to eventually spend time in academic medicine/research, which makes me lean towards Tulane. However, I'd love to move close to my family and friends for a while and living in a cheap, quiet town seems like it would be conducive to medical school life. I don't know if the jump from $120,000 in tuition to $240,000 could be justified. I just don't want to miss out on opportunities that I think Tulane would offer me.
Pros
- $28,000/year tuition
- Super close community environment
- Brand new medical school building
- 2hr drive from my family
- Shreveport is a cheap place to live
Cons
- Matches mainly in state within other LSU programs (I want to go out of state most likely)
- Does not match with many top tier programs
Tulane
Pros
- Top tier medical school
- Match rates are great and many match into prestigious, competitive programs
- Living in a larger, more diverse city
- Name carries more weight than LSUS
Cons
- New Orleans is more expensive and prone to natural disasters, more dangerous, etc.
- $60,000/year tuition
