I think I'd also like to give my opinion.
About me: I am also a lucom student. I like the "critique" stem so I've copied the trend.
Kudos to MsCritique and Mrcririque. You guys gave your review and opinion of lucom including the dirt knowing that you can face expulsion or at least a stressful meeting with the deans. You've got guts that other lucom students are gossiping about in the library as we type.
Pros: great OMM lab (I love the panoramic view on the 4th floor overlooking the mountains)
2) very intelligent professors
3) an awesome undergrad gym that the med students have access to
4) Dr. Wells ... he taught neuro like a pro. I've understood neuro better than any course.
5) chick Fila (am I right fellow classmates?)
6) walls that you can write on
7) compass groups (which are pseudo social groups to dicuss topics like ethics, emotional competency, leadership qualities, etc). Although other students have not had favorable compass group discussions, like students denouncing gays etc.
8) Dr. Martin is an awesome, very experienced and well respected person. He makes himself available for the students.
Cons:
1) library isn't 24 hrs . Especially before an exam
2) library closes during convocation.
3) professors who make crappy questions like that holiness pcm question.
4) ultra conservative /religious students who have no problem judging you.
5) a fake happy go lucky official lucom Facebook page.
6) a small kitchen area for students. This is going to be fun when the next class gets here. Although Dr. Martin promised us more space and maybe a Starbucks? Dreaming.
7) not enough options for rotations Rotations are mostly at smaller clinics. With the exception of the major lynchburg hospital Aka Centra.
8) families and couples being given preference over singles for Centra
9) CVRH (cardiovascular respiratory and heme) course was taught like crap. thanks Dormer.
10) close minded/ fake students
Comments: to prospective students, read MsCritique's comments. I don't think she was unprofessional. She was straight to the point without any fluff.
I think she was doing LUCOM a service actually. "Don't come to lucom because it's the only school that you got into." Dean Martin had said this to me durinf my interview with the school. Come here if it is a good fit for you. MsCritique was giving you the dirt so that you can make the best decision for you. She is helping lucom to find the best fit for them, even if it means graduating students who are ultra conservative and super christian.
Yes there are close minded students and professors here. Yes some students are fake, but you will find fakeness everywhere that you go in every state and in every school. My advice, Learn how to play the game and practice your best poker face.
Yes there are professors that you will dislike and that's okay. (these professors need to understand that they will not be liked by all and if they are offended by it then tough).
Yes there will be crappy questions that will get thrown out (we hope) . Remember the boards weigh a lot more for a residency and there are no crappy (religious) questions on the boards so breathe.
This student body of 2018 is very diverse. We have students in the military, from small towns, from big cities, from the south, from the north, from different religions. Are there clashes? Ofcourse.
To my classmates who asked MsCritique to leave because she doesn't like some of the things about LUCOM here is a little tid bit from Dean Martin that I remember when our professional student clubs were being developed. If you don't agree with the way an institution runs or is operating, the only way to make a positive change, or to steer it in the right direction is to get involved from the inside. Staying out of it will do no good.
I would hope that LUCOM does not investigate students who are on here as it would show insecurity on their part and a desire for control.
My fav professors: Dr. Ianuzzo, Dr. O, Dr. Witt, Dr. Seiler, Dr. Hoegorrell (spelling), Dr. Wells, Dr. Troy and our microbiology Dr. Lui (I come to his lectures just for the entertainment, like his perverted sex comment. I can't tell you how many students were snickering in the back talking about oral sex)
My fav classmate: Travis (the guy is funny)
My least fav professors: Dr. Dormer. He seems intelligent...just not a very good teacher.
Professors that I'm not sure about:
Dr. Kribbs. He is very intelligent and knows his OMM stuff but I think he's wound up too tight.
Dr. Huber, I think he's bipolar. Sometimes he's really nice and other times he can be a d....
Dr. Lockwood. He sounds like an auctioneer. Please sllloowwww down.
