LUCOM: Pros and Cons from current students

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If PP is still a thing by the time we practice 🙁
Man it better be... Fellowship till I die! I am not doing all this work to increase some jerks bonus at 'corporate'

I may be altruistic but I don't like voluntarily being taken advantage of...

It's sad but a lot of people nowadays don't want the hassle of being in PP and would rather let someone else take care of all of that for them (via being an employee). This paradigm shift has really changed medicine. Personally, I plan on never being an employee. In fact, I will take a pay cut (if applicable) in order to not be.

Teaching moment! What the OP has done probably violates professionalism codes at her school. If a student of my were doing the same, and we knew who it was, it would mean a visit to the Dean's office. It would not be a happy visit.

I was referring to future workplaces. I know that people that work at Centra Hospital in Lynchburg can get fired if they talk badly about the hospital. I don't think we signed anything about LUCOM. It might be in the handbook but I don't know

Med schools don't get yearly probation. New schools are typically given 3, 5 or 7 year provisional accreditation.

Since this is a new school, shouldn't COCA or AOA or someone be making annual visits? They should have a session where it's just students where students can bring up issues like this. From what I've heard they take stuff like this pretty seriously.

I hadn't thought about the test question! That would be enough to probably get someone expelled from my school. I'm conflicted because it WAS a bad test question....from a construct design, not from a religious dogma angle.

I don't know the exact wording, but it's a "behave on the internet and don't embarrass us or yourself" type of clause. Sort of like "don't post pics of you hitting on a bong or going topless on Facebook". Basically, it boils down to maintaining professional demeanor.

I'm very conflicted because I feel that the more dish that comes out on LUCOM, the better.

But OP, tread carefully.

What part of the codes does this typically fall under? Are there "don't say bad things about the school" provisions? Or is it that he disclosed a test question?

That awkward moment when people don't realize you're being sarcastic.

You have a really good residency program then. Not because of your posts are unprofessional, but from the grievances I've seen from other residents about their programs! Your posts are great!

I thought the military was the only institution with a policy that says, "We can sanction you for anything at anytime based on how much you piss us off."[/QUOTE]

I absolutely love my program. I take a lot of crap in the Mil Med forum for that (and other things), but I would genuinely put my program up against any other Ortho program in the country.
In like a bench press competition or what?

😛

I read your handbook. There are several sections which could be skewed to represent this. Seeing as a A is basically 95% plus I would be careful with what your posting. If your for real about your grade and that question being the *only* one you missed I bet your ID could be figured out.

I guarantee any parent hospital will drop you like a rock if you start spouting off horrible things about them in public, they also could start 'leaking' personal info about your 'issues' according to them. Look at any whistleblower, their credibility is almost always immediately attacked after they talk. It may take longer as a physician but it can and will happen eventually, exercise tack when using the interwebs.
This is assuming that everything I've said about my identity is true 🙂

While we're airing our dirty laundry, I would like to voice my concern over the recent volume level in the library because apparently this is the most appropriate place to bring our concerns instead of discussing them directly with the people that can actually make a change. I just wanted to warn everyone in SDN World that people talk in our library sometimes so you should probably go to another school if you have the opportunity.
I'm really glad that people are talking. It allows to really see what/how LUCOM students think.

Thanks for the information, prospective students need to know the pros and cons of a school, rather then what is sold to them by the marketing team. Consider the Carribeans for example, as when they are advertising their pass rates, one may think, that they have it in the bag once they get in. However, experiences here from both current and former students speak to the contrary.

The only thing I really see is people getting over defensive which is understandable, but at the same time, it only strengths Ms/Mr argument. Perceptions do matter.

Earlier in this thread you were upset that people thought you were lying; admitting you've said not-true things now does not help your argument.
Again, it's up to the users and readers to believe or be skeptical of what I've said here. I need to conceal my identity from alot of people. The only thing that's absolutely undeniably real about me, is that I am a LUCOM student, and I am here to candidly review the school in its entirety (the good, the bad and the ugly). That includes it's building, academics, student body, professors, rotations, scores etc.

And for those who lack a thick skin...a bit of advice...nothing in the world is sacred anymore...get used to that. Everything is capable of being scrutinized.

To my fellow classmates, toughen up. When you step out of Liberty's bubble, if you can't rationally analyze a critique and instead become emotionally distressed and accost other students for being "unprofessional" on SDN, then you've got a long way to go.

Dude got in and proceeded to act like an idiot on the net. School rescinded offer of admission, and school dean got arrested for DWI.

I think I'd also like to give my opinion.

About me: I am also a lucom student. I like the "critique" stem so I've copied the trend.

Kudos to MsCritique and Mrcririque. You guys gave your review and opinion of lucom including the dirt knowing that you can face expulsion or at least a stressful meeting with the deans. You've got guts that other lucom students are gossiping about in the library as we type.

Pros: great OMM lab (I love the panoramic view on the 4th floor overlooking the mountains)

2) very intelligent professors
3) an awesome undergrad gym that the med students have access to
4) Dr. Wells ... he taught neuro like a pro. I've understood neuro better than any course.
5) chick Fila (am I right fellow classmates?)
6) walls that you can write on
7) compass groups (which are pseudo social groups to dicuss topics like ethics, emotional competency, leadership qualities, etc). Although other students have not had favorable compass group discussions, like students denouncing gays etc.

8) Dr. Martin is an awesome, very experienced and well respected person. He makes himself available for the students.

Cons:

1) library isn't 24 hrs . Especially before an exam
2) library closes during convocation.
3) professors who make crappy questions like that holiness pcm question.
4) ultra conservative /religious students who have no problem judging you.
5) a fake happy go lucky official lucom Facebook page.
6) a small kitchen area for students. This is going to be fun when the next class gets here. Although Dr. Martin promised us more space and maybe a Starbucks? Dreaming.
7) not enough options for rotations Rotations are mostly at smaller clinics. With the exception of the major lynchburg hospital Aka Centra.
8) families and couples being given preference over singles for Centra
9) CVRH (cardiovascular respiratory and heme) course was taught like crap. thanks Dormer.
10) close minded/ fake students

Comments: to prospective students, read MsCritique's comments. I don't think she was unprofessional. She was straight to the point without any fluff.

I think she was doing LUCOM a service actually. "Don't come to lucom because it's the only school that you got into." Dean Martin had said this to me durinf my interview with the school. Come here if it is a good fit for you. MsCritique was giving you the dirt so that you can make the best decision for you. She is helping lucom to find the best fit for them, even if it means graduating students who are ultra conservative and super christian.

Yes there are close minded students and professors here. Yes some students are fake, but you will find fakeness everywhere that you go in every state and in every school. My advice, Learn how to play the game and practice your best poker face.

Yes there are professors that you will dislike and that's okay. (these professors need to understand that they will not be liked by all and if they are offended by it then tough).

Yes there will be crappy questions that will get thrown out (we hope) . Remember the boards weigh a lot more for a residency and there are no crappy (religious) questions on the boards so breathe.

This student body of 2018 is very diverse. We have students in the military, from small towns, from big cities, from the south, from the north, from different religions. Are there clashes? Ofcourse.

To my classmates who asked MsCritique to leave because she doesn't like some of the things about LUCOM here is a little tid bit from Dean Martin that I remember when our professional student clubs were being developed. If you don't agree with the way an institution runs or is operating, the only way to make a positive change, or to steer it in the right direction is to get involved from the inside. Staying out of it will do no good.

I would hope that LUCOM does not investigate students who are on here as it would show insecurity on their part and a desire for control.

My fav professors: Dr. Ianuzzo, Dr. O, Dr. Witt, Dr. Seiler, Dr. Hoegorrell (spelling), Dr. Wells, Dr. Troy and our microbiology Dr. Lui (I come to his lectures just for the entertainment, like his perverted sex comment. I can't tell you how many students were snickering in the back talking about oral sex)

My fav classmate: Travis (the guy is funny)

My least fav professors: Dr. Dormer. He seems intelligent...just not a very good teacher.

Professors that I'm not sure about:
Dr. Kribbs. He is very intelligent and knows his OMM stuff but I think he's wound up too tight.
Dr. Huber, I think he's bipolar. Sometimes he's really nice and other times he can be a d....
Dr. Lockwood. He sounds like an auctioneer. Please sllloowwww down.

I'm going to need to hear rebuttals from Ultracritique and Ubercritique before I can finalize my feelings about LUCOM.
That would be nice. I welcome supporters of LUCOM. Their opinions matter too. It's important for them to dispel any misconceptions that the other students have expressed here

It's a sad day when airing of grievances is rolled up under the banner of "unprofessional". Nothing he said here was insulting, designed to offend or inflame. He expressed frustration and upset at a situation.

I thought the military was the only institution with a policy that says, "We can sanction you for anything at anytime based on how much you piss us off."
"Unprofessionalism" is a ruse that the Stalinists in academia use to get rid of undesireables.

You wish.

I bet if the school was the exact same, only Islamic instead of Christian, every single one of you would either A.) not say a single negative word about it or B.) defend every single practice.

Yes, like those students who show continually late for rounds or surgery, scream at their professors in front of a full class, can't do anything correct with a standardized patient, cheat, lie or steal.

LOL at my MD school we didnt do any at all 1st year. I bet this school is better than my 100 year old MD school.

Actually consider yourself lucky you are at an MD school that is 100 years old, many DO schools have issues mostly because COCA is very quick to put its stamp of approval on any new school, LUCOM is a shining example of the serious issues that a good number DO schools have, RVU before was one school I thought was bad because it was associated with a family that built for profit offshore foreign medical schools, but this school takes the cake.

Of course there are schools that have made the profession look good like my own and others that have forward thinking people, but then there are schools like this that drag the profession backwards.

Even very religious MD schools such as Loma Linda and Georgetown are not like this at all.

I interviewed here and I have to say that I pleasantly surprised. It is a damn shame that there are no board scores to evaluate the performance of the two classes.

Im good 🙂 just making a point.
Hi, Could you tell me a little more about LUCOM? I have an II later this month, and I was wondering if you could tell me about the curriculum, grading, things you like, things you don't, if it prepared you well for the board exams and how were the COMPLEX scores? There is no report on it, I would like to know how the inaugural class did, if you know info on that. Thank you!

It's COMLEX, not COMPLEX.
