Hey SDN,
I'm taking 48 hours off (well, more like 12) off from studying b/c I'm home for Thanksgiving. My family is off at an event tonight and I got home early. So, if you care to, feel free to ask me anything about m1 year. I'll be responsive for the next 48 hours at least! FWIW me: nontrad, low GPA, multiple MD acceptances, loving med school, etc.

Were you ever uncertain about your ability to do well enough on the MCAT to get an MD acceptance?

how is the dating scene like ?? For you and others ... How is the mood around students do they get along or just okay with each other ?

What specialties are you most interested in at this point?

As a non-trad, did you have any research experience prior to medical school? Are you involved in any research right now, and are you planning on doing any this summer?

Where do you go (if you're willing to answer), and what made you pick there?

Yes I was. That is why I studied my ass off for the many weeks before the MCAT, and particularly the 4 weeks before the exam, and PARTICULARLY the week or two before the exam. Except the night before. I actually got the score on the real MCAT that I scored on my best practice exam. Interestingly, this matches my study habits in med school.

Yes I was a researcher with the FDA for about 2 years before med school, but only full time for about 6-9 months or so. My first first-author publication was published just this week in fact!! Yes, I am involved in research right now, in the lab of a productive PhD's lab who is an assistant professor in a competitive surgical sub-specialty. My research involvement is very limited, however, I am glad I made connections early so I have someplace to nest in the M1-M2 summer. And, of course, I am planning on doing research this summer. I think research was one of my big selling points as a non-trad - along with good post-bacc grades/mcat score, and clinical experience. For the school that I chose to attend, research was not required but was looked favorably upon.

I am interested (in order) in ENT, OB/gyn, ortho, psychiatry, heme/onc, interventional rads, and family medicine. I know, the list makes no sense. The thing about psych is that I find it interesting and I will be able to practice until I'm like 90. The thing about ENT is that it has both diagnostic and operative aspects. Ortho is great but is purely operative. OB/Gyn is great because its primary care, medicine, surgery, babies are awesome, and females are much better patients than males - but the hours suck.

I loved everyone I met here, it's a big state school in a college town which is the diamateric opposite of my undergrad experience, and, perhaps most importantly, in-state tuition. But, the reputation and people and curriculum are all amazing. I could not be happier with my choice in attending this school.

As far as a low GPA, what were you working with (if you don't mind) and how did you explain your lower GPA during the application/interview process? Did you do a post-bacc? Overall how was the application process as a non-trad?

is house baratheon really your choice over the obvious best answer? (house stark duh)

Asking the important questions.

I've got a serious question: does your school use the standard 2+2 curriculum or is it a 1.5+2.5 or even a 1+3? If it's not a traditional 2+2, how do you like it so far?

My amcas gpa was about a 2.77. I explained it through actions - I did poorly as an undergrad then when I truly decided to pursue medicine, I did very well academically. The strategy was to improve my GPA by taking BCPM classes that werent' too hard and get As in them. I took most of my classes at CC, though I believe I received a great education. I can't say whether the CC was easier than traditional colleges. My GPA never came up during the app process in interviews, mostly because I addressed it in a a highly personal manner in my PS.I took the app process more serious than alot of my undergrad counterparts and I think that helped me - I spent more time writing my application and refiniing my statement, etc. Overall, I applied to like 30 schools, got 3 MD interviews and 3 acceptances. So, I didn't get much love in terms of interviews, but the places who interviewed me I did well.

I love the stag banner of house Baratheon. Probably a holdover from my love of Harry's patronus in the harry potter series lol. I do love Jaime, but I think House Stark is probably my favorite lol. Of course, I am referring to the books. The TV show is great, but nowhere near the quality of the books.

Edit: Bonus points if you can guess what House my avatar words belong to, without looking it up...

"traditional" in the sense of 2 pre-clerkship years and 2 clerkship years, though we have multiple patient exposure experiences throughout the first 2 years. For example, I auscultated my first heart murmur on a real patient a few weeks ago and have delivered news to patients already (under the supervision of an attending, of course).

The dating scene within med school is exactly what youd expect - tame and lame. Except for people getting wasted, hooking up, and thus sprouting long-term relationships (I can think of ...2? in my class so far), the dating scene within med school is not great. Also, many people are married and have significant others before starting school. I can't speak to a large portion of the class, but I assume they are not meeting dating partners because we are so busy and just bc I know them and their personalities. Personally, I'm doing ok. I met my current girlfriend through Tinder. She is an undergrad. Also, I have gone on several dates, mostly thru Tinder, but also through randomly meeting girls at the bar, coffee shop, whatever. I would guess in terms of dating life, that I am near the top of my class simply because that is important to me and I spend precious studying time pursuing those goals, whereas other people in my class focus on studying and in their free time choose to get wasted and hang out together (which I am totally a fan of as well!). I go to a big state school, so I like to leverage the med student card - to limited success. The real limiting factor is time. I am busy basically all the time. And when I'm not scheduled, I need to be grocery shopping, doing other ADL, exercising, sleeping, watching netflix, or, most importantly, studying.

The mood is an interesting question. Everyone is friendly, but cliques certainly develop. I consider everyone in my class my friends, but I don't think the feeling is mutual. Many people in my class don't know each other. I wish I was more ingrained with the "cool" group in my class, but c'est la vie. I have a few good friends, and am cool with everyone, and overall am happy.

Yes, probably not, and I'm on reddit too. You can probably guess my username.

Why ask a question you already know the answer to? Just because social life in UG sucks doesn't mean things will change in med school, as evidenced by his reply. Happy?

This is the best case of projection I have ever seen you didnt give the guy who ask him why not house stark any crap. Social life in UG was a blast for me and I wanted to know if medical school still have people having a good one with all the work.. Dont try and push your insecurities onto me and my post .. And this is a AMA for Hindu so you dont get to choose what is important or not..

I will not respond in fear of derailing this thread thanks for the response and Lose in translation, your response wasn't appreciated but not a big deal happy thanks giving yall

Who's the one that's insecure, feeling the need to express how "great" his UG social life was? There is no need to be upset.

Is your school big on research? If so, how easy is/was it to find a mentor/PI conducting a study that you were interested in? Do you find that research opportunities for for topics one is interested in are readily available, for lack of a better phrase? Or are many students finding themselves working on projects that they many not feel that passionate about? I realize that circumstances will differ from school to school, but seeing as you're at a rather large state school, it seems that it wouldn't bode well for smaller schools that are big on research if the answer was no.

Well, we get like 8-12 hours of "free time" per day if you subtract 8 hours for sleep and time for mandatory lectures or small group sessions. Weekends are obviously our own time.

Personally, the first 4 weeks of our 8 week blocks, I don't do, like, anything. Maybe 2-3 hours per day on weekdays and zero on weekends. Weeks 4-6, its about 6-8 hours per day outside of class and 8+ hours/day on weekends. Weeks 7,8, and test week, its pretty much all med school all the time. These are just approximations. I'm sure there are weeks early in block where I spend 8 hours doing school work, and a few hours on the weekends; similarly, there are days in week 7 (like today) where I only did 3 hours of review then watched like 3 hours of walking dead and 2 of the office...

Guys, both of your avvies are of anime. Stop trying to act cool.

and the drama continues....

I'm not going to make the effort to respond to someone who still types like they're 14.

What is the median age in your class if you can guess and also how old is the oldest?

Can you compare the complexity of the classes to your undergraduate/CC ones?

You make the workload sound manageable compared to my assumptions of sleepless nights reading/studying.

Good Luck!

How much clinical interaction do you guys get, and how do you feel about it?

Thanks for sticking around to answer our questions!

ah man the days when people used 1337 speak unironically.... miss them

The joys of being a 2000's kid.

Kids today don't know all the good stuff they're missing out on. All they have are those new god-awful cartoons like Adventure Time, whereas we had GIJOE!!!! and Dragonball Z and quality stuff.

do you know any introverts. how do they cope in med school (like during the clinical interactions).

Median age is like 23 probably maybe 22, mean age I think is 24

Well, we don't really have "classes" per se. The only comparison that could even possibly be made is Anatomy. And obviously since we are working a real cadaver, the anatomy is much more difficult and hands on and we have to know common clinical situations based on the anatomy we are studying. So, honestly, no, I cannot compare the complexity of the classes to my undergraduate ones. It is overall much harder and more complex, with much less time to study.

Haha well I'm not a top student by any means, so that's why my workload sounds more manageable. Also I do have many long days and nights.

How much more studying does med school require over getting decent grades as ugrad bio major

How's the weather over there? Also, is there a lot of drama in your class or is everyone reasonably chill?

@HinduHammer, you said you leverage the med student card, but everything i've read on SDN says med students don't really have any because of lack of time etc.. are they just coping? i'd think it'd be good in a college town

I can only speak for myself. In normal conversation it comes up what your role in life is. Thus, I speak naturally and proudly about being a med student and the great opportunities I have and life that I lead. I think the thing your hearing on SDN is that people try and brag about being a med student. I think bragging like that shows massive insecurity. There's a really good book I like called "You say more than you think" by Janine Driver. It's a body language/psychology book. The ending theme of the book is that one should not wait for happiness. So, if you want to date someone or make friends - go out and talk to people and put yourself out there. Don't brag but be proud of your achievements. If you get into a US MD school that's a big accomplishment. (Now you just have to worry about passing!) Anyway, are people just coping? Couldn't say. There are a couple people in my class who apparently drunkenly go up to girls and say "Do you like doctors?" in a joking (but, to me, sleazy) way. I would refrain from that approach. College towns are good, but harder if you're not caucasian in my experience in the midwest.

You're welcome! We have a student run free clinic with like 1 or 2 attendings that sign off on stuff. So we can get tons of patient experience if we choose. In terms of mandated patient experience, we have a good amount through required shadowing for an afternoon every other week. I like it, though it takes away time from studying. I hate having to dress all professional and leave after lecture and drive over to clinic when I could be in gym shorts, get a quick lift in after lecture, and sit in my dungeon desk and study for 4-6 hours and be done at 6pm instead of being in clinic all afternoon and fight traffic and get home at 6 and then have to do 3-4 hours of work. It also depends on what your shadowing experience is. I got endocrinology, whereas one of my lab mates got neurosurgery. I'd probably be more interested in shadowing a neurosurgeon. During the shadowing I can deliver news, get histories, and perform minor physical exam stuff.

Alot more.Wish I could give you a better/more explanatory answer, but..yeah. Alot more. Material isn't harder, just alot more of it.

Weather varies. Started getting cold in the last few weeks...

Drama? Not inter class drama per se. Everyone is more or less worried about their own bull****. WIthin the cliques and social circles within the class, though, I would imagine there is drama. Overall though, people are reasonably chill.

Many introverts tend to group together and form small groups of 2-3. I haven't seen how they cope with others. Being an introvert can be dangerous, as you might fall through the cracks. I know of one girl who was very introverted always sat by herself in lectures and didn' talk much at all, and she already dropped out. She might come back next year..

Bro the "coldest" we've had here so far was 65 degrees on Monday. I actually had to wear a jacket and jeans to school instead of t-shirt and shorts.

That kind of "drama" sounds about right. Med school's tough enough as it is without pointless extra crap. But sh** still happens whether we like it or not. Glad to hear most of your class is chill. I can't imagine going somewhere that had mostly unchill people.

What's your current friend group like? My main crew is pretty nerdy but also fun and sociable and chill and awesome.

Also to @HinduHammer & @Ace Khalifa how would you describe the cool kids at your school. Med school normally attracts a certain type of personality I would think the popular kids would be different than what we see in college..
