I am a Psychology major and in Oct. next year I will graduate with a BA in psych. I want to become a counselor (probably with a specialty in family and marriage counseling). I'm going to do a masters in counseling but I'm not sure which degree would benefit me more, MA or MS? I know one is a masters of art and the other science, but other than that I am unsure of what they each would mean towards a career. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks!

The actual "MA" or "MS" on your degree will not mean much. What will be important are the amount of credits and if your school properly prepares your for licensure as a professional counselor.

If you are interested in counseling families and couples though, you might be more interested in Masters programs in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) rather than in counseling. Just a thought 🙂

Yeah, looked into a MFT program as well. I'm not sure what to do yet 😕. Thanks for the response!
