Hello everyone,

I have been fortunately enough to be accepted into several dental schools.
And to cover the astronomical tuition these schools will be charging me, I have been working 50+ hours weeks.
But this has taken a toll on my school mark.

Right now, I am taking 2 English courses (the only pre reqs I have left) but I have a feeling that I will be getting a D in one and C- in another. Some schools have told me that C is necessary while some didn't specify a mark (but I would assume it is C).

IF I get a D and C, how will this affect my admission statue?

Same here, i am taking bunch of 4th year environmental chemistry for my minor and its boring me to death. i have been getting Cs all along.
Don't know what's going to happen when i finally send my full transcript.

I go to a hard school and its not possible to slack off and get a B+ or A-
Sighhhhhh

Environ chem is not a pre req. So so long as it doesn't drop your GPA significantly (and it can't) you are fine.
My problem is that the courses I am taking are pre reqs.

It's possible to have your acceptance revoked. Work hard, you still got more than a month to go.

Munchy, what kind of job do you have that can make enough for the cost of dental school? You will be getting loans either way.

According to the conditions of acceptance.... yes

HOWEVER, I have heard of stories of some students being admitted into dental school still after doing poorly (or not passing) a specific pre-req.... the condition was, that after they finish dental school, they go back to undergrad and complete the pre-req...

Just do your best to earn a C, quit you job if you have to, focus on obtaining that C

why are you busting your ass working trying to make money when you are putting your acceptance at risk, and making money at 1/10th the rate you'll be able to after you graduate. you are busting your **** trying to pick up an amount of money which is basically insignificant. just chill and enjoy yourself before school starts.

No it is not as much as how much I'll be making as a dentist but I am making way more than an average graduate with Bsc.

Please understand that as an international student I am not eligible for any of the federal funding you guys are receiving. If I can't come up with money, I can't go to dental school REGARDLESS of whether I ace the courses or not.

ahh, interesting.

but you can still get loans in general, just not from the federal government, right?

only about 150k.
The rest, you and your family must come up with.

My question is, will dental schools understand my situation IF i get a mark that is lower than what they expected?

Why don't you email them and ask them? no one here can give you a definitive answer.

In my opinion, I think acceptances are conditional, you must fulfill the conditions to be admitted, there's no Ifs and Buts, just DO or DO NOT.

Time to study.

lol

I think D will definitely revoke your admittance but C might be okay, depending on how you were doing before you applied.

If you were straight A student with few B's here and there, then getting a C could be a red flag...

thats only true if the OP doesn't have an acceptance at hand, since he does, a C grade doesn't violate any acceptance conditions

Here is another plan Munchy...

Are these classes also offered for the summer term? If yes, many summer semesters end before most dental schools start..... Maybe you could drop one of the 2 classes, and retake over the summer

Munchy, would it be possible to kill your social life so that you can spend more time on the class you're getting a D in? And by that I also mean no internet (only check your email once a day for a certain length of time).

I know that's not a fun plan, but it could help depending on how much time you're spending doing things other than studying and working. 50 hours a week is a lot, but there's still time left in the week to study.

If that doesn't help, you should look into taking one of the classes over the summer (and not necessarily at your school even). If you get a W in a class, it's better than a D, and then you'll also have more time to focus on the other class.

Also, since the prereq is just to take two writing intensive English courses (correct me if I am mistaken), if you withdraw from one of the classes, you can take almost any English class over the summer to fulfill it, right?

Even doubling the hours you work per week, it is unlikely that you will make a significant dent in the astronomical tuition/debt you will be incurring. Why jeopardize your admission?

Munchy are you Canadian? Canadian students can get private loans in the US with the help of a cosigner...I would suggest going that route rather than risking your acceptance. Also, rather than asking maybe call the dental school anonymously and speak to someone?? They maybe able to give you a clear answer. A C should be okay, a D may be breaking the deal.

Hi everyone,

Thanks alot for your replies.
Hm, I didn't know you could finish your pre reqs in the summer. I thought they had to finish by May.

Doc, yes the money I am making right now won't be a significant help but at least it will cover up my living. To someone who has to come up with 300k all by himself, every penny counts.

Dentalpath, unfortunately, I don't have a US co-signer.

I guess I have an escape route. If worst comes to worst, I'll drop a course and retake it over summer. But can anyone confirm this? B/c summer courses will finish beginning-mid of August and some dental school start early August.

I had straight 4.0 in my last 2 years and good DAT. It's so f***ing sad how I am struggling to get a C.

Hey Munchy, i feel for you, tough position. If i were you, and i'm not, i would take it easy on the work and focus on my primary goal (dental school). I would then use the summer to bust my ass safe in the knowledge that I have already made it.

Honestly, putting your future in jeopard for a few bucks now makes absolutely no sense..... trust me, if yr acceptance is revoked all that cash wont help you get over it,

Just my 2 cents,

best of luck

many 4-year universities have 2 summer "semesters". Like oakland in rochester michigan has summer 1 start in Early May and end June 22nd... and summer 2 starts in late June till mid August.

I know many schools do this alongside many community colleges.... so If your struggling to land that C... Find out which school near by (OR COMMUNITY COLLEGE) offers the same class over the first summer term..... Just be sure ur dental school is okay with community college credits.

As far as completing your pre-reqs over the summer, I am pretty sure they don't care when you complete them AS LONG AS ITS BEFORE matriculation....

Honestly Munchy, you should contact your dental school, tell them this is happening, and see what advice they give you, suggest to them the summer 1 term option and if they are okay with community college credit to complete your pre-req... it will be better than anything you hear from SDN
