A purely logistical question. When mailing application materials to the departments/graduate schools, is one supposed to include a cover letter of any sort (not counting the PS, if included)? An envelope within the shipping envelope? How have you handled this problem?
Thanks!

It's just gonna get tossed aside. Provide them exactly what they ask for, a cover letter is just wasted effort in my opinion. Most schools have the graduate secretary assemble all the packages. If you want to tell him/her thanks for his/her efforts it might be a pleasant surprise for him/her.

I always included a cover letter that numbered exactly what I included in the packet. I'd also mention the things that were coming separate from my packet. It was more to keep myself organized than anything else.

I am doing the same however I have never done this process before.

yup I included a cover letter, i think giving your name, etc. is probably helpful to the schools when filing- although I made sure my name was on every piece of paper, and usually my SS#. some schools requested it.

I only had to snail-mail two apps and I didn't send a cover letter in either. I got accepted to both programs. I honestly think it doesn't matter. They know what the mail is for.

...just think about all those trees!! 🙄

So the University of Miami lists a PO Box as the address to which supporting documents should be mailed. I sent my package overnight on Tuesday and they still have not picked it up from the post office..(USPS site says that they left a notice in the box). Has anyone experienced a similar issue? I called the school and they said that they have someone come once a day, but I don't understand how my package was not received if they do, in fact, pick up their mail daily.... any words of wisdom?

Maybe it hasn't been scanned yet, and they put the delivery notice there for the interim? University mail is always a bit.....adventurous, so I'm sure you aren't the only one who has encountered a snag, whether it is on the front end of delivery, or on the back end of getting sent to the right department. Take a deep breath and check in tomorrow.
