Hey guys,

Alright, my undergrad (pitt) offers an emergancy medicine major. As I am an EMT-B now, I'm thinking this would be a great way to spend my undergrad years (its a two year major, jr and senior year). Not only do I think I could do well, but it would help me stand out from the 1000's of bio majors out there. I'd probably take some post bac courses after getting my EM major.

My other option is to continue on my bio major....

I'd appreciate your take on this

Most medical schools really don't care what your major is as long as you've completed the prereqs. Do whatever you think you will enjoy most.

I am also an EMT, and in my experience medical schools haven't seemed that impressed with my work as an EMT. I wonder if the emergency medicine major would be perceived as less rigorous than a biology major by med school admissions committees? On the other hand, I have a friend at GWU who's a paramedic and did her degree in emergency medicine; she got accepted to GWU med school and will be attending in the fall. So maybe these concerns are unfounded, but just in my experience the med schools I interviewed at weren't that impressed with my work as an EMT so I don't know what they'd think of an emergency medicine major.

PITTMD911...do you even WANT to major in emergency medicine instead of Bio? Are you doing it just to stand out? Major in whatever the hell you want to man! Get your bachelors in whatever, it doesn't make a difference.
Why do so many premeds feel compelled to major in Bio if they do not even like it? And, then they chose another major solely based on trying to stand out from other cookie-cutter premeds, instead of having a real passion for the major?
The key to success, in my opinion, as an undergrad is a true passion for whatever you are majoring in...The adcoms will see right through you when they asked you why you majored in Bio...What will you say if they ask you this question? Something like this - "I thought it was a good major for medical school!" --Wrong answer dude!
I choose to major in psych because I loved it from the first time I took it in high school. I didn't try to just make myself stand out; this thought didn't even cross my mind. You should do the same to whomever this applies to.
