Would med schools look badly upon me if I changed my major? Currently I
am a biochem major I like it for the most part but I feel I would be much happier going down another path. In the end I know where I want to end up and that is pursuing medicine but I would rather enjoy my path to get there as well.

Changing your major shouldn't hurt you. Biochem is a really tough major, and you should ask yourself, do you not like the major because it is really hard? Or, do you not like it because you are generally not interested in it. Either way, you are going to have to take the hard science courses at medical school. If you hate it so much, or if you can't handle the hard science, then you might want to consider another career path.

Yeah it's really tough. No need to stress yourself out if you don't want/have to. Major isn't important - it's how you do and your resulting GPA is what they look at. Definitely do something you enjoy!

It is not because I have trouble with the sciences no doubt I have had some struggles but its nothing hard work cant overcome. It has nothing to do with the difficulty of the degree it has more to do with me believing I would enjoy my undergrad much more if I go in another direction. Like I said my ultimate goal is medicine and that is where I am headed. As far as your comment on not pursuing medicine you dont have to neccessarily be a science wiz to go into medicine i'm sure there are plenty of great doctors who faced the same struggles as me.

No need to be defensive! These are good reasons to change majors - I would just make sure that whatever one I changed to was one that I could still graduate on time with.

Not defensive sorry if it seemed that way. I am sure I could still graduate in the same time.

Out of curiosity, what do you plan on changing your major to?

I ask because changing from BS. in Biochem to BA. in Communications would raise a few eyebrows. The example I gave is pretty drastic, but none the less I think you need to take a step back and evaluate your situation as a whole - including your future pursuits.

Ya know?

I have not decided yet I know what you mean though. That is kind of why I asked some of my interests at this point are philosophy, kinesiology, psychology, sociology and even history.

Dude philosophy and history all the way, but thats just me.

Its a big decision. Make sure you know all the variables before comitting.

Edit: Im sure with the science courses you have taken you might still be able to pick up a Bio/chem minor and commit your efforts to another major.

I took a Philosophy class and it had my attention the whole way as opposed to some of the classes I am taking now. I have always been a history person I find events interesting.

I personally think that non-Bio majors have an easier time standing out - if you want to study something else, go for it! 20 years ago, maybe it would have been better to stick with the biochem, but I think adcoms these days really do value the diverse academic backgrounds. I would think too that this change would not even show up on your transcript (or that it might not be something they notice since everything is read quickly).

As long as you can explain why you chose your major, it should be fine.

(Although I would take this all back if you are applying MD/PhD in which case they care less about your human well-roundedness and more about your brute strength brilliance).

I switched majors and because of that took an extra year to graduate. I seemed to do fine in the application process. 😳 Just wanted to throw that out there - it's not detrimental to your application and if they ask why just give them a good honest answer.
