Hello all,

I am a non-trad about to apply this upcoming cycle for mostly D.O. schools and low tier MD.

I graduated 2015 w/ my BSN and have been working as a pediatric trauma nurse the past 3+ years. My cGPA from undergrad was 3.7 and my nursing sGPA was a 4.0 (current GPA is 3.76). I've taken most of the pre-reqs at a community college down the street from my apartment, except for genetics and physiology at the uni.

I had $30k+ in student loans from my undergrad and didn't want to add another 10 on top of that at the university, but I am worried that this will impact me negatively in my application. I have made a 4.0 in all of the pre-reqs since starting them, the only course I haven't taken yet is orgo II and biochem (I am currently auditing biochem). I won't take the MCAT until May. Thoughts on how this might impact me?

Select schools that will accept community college credits without any upper division substitutes. It won’t hurt you, just severely limit the number of schools that will take your application with serious consideration.

I think a lot is going to depend on your MCAT. Getting around a 504 and above will show the schools (D.O. at least) that the science classes you took were no joke. To be competitive for M.D., you're going to need closer to a 508.

Look at your State schools and see if they take CC credit in pre-reqs.
If they do .Its fine, Just do well in your classes and do well on the mcat.

I think it should be OK. It'll limit the amount of schools you can apply to since you'll have to apply to those that accept CC credits. Do well on the MCAT and you should be OK...

The community college is not the concern. You should do well in the courses and then do well on the MCAT.

The issue is also school specific. The more competitive the school, then the harder it will be to compete with students who probably completed all of their coursework at a four-year.

You did say DO and "low-tier" MD so I don't know what you are concerned about.

I'm taking a majority of my prerequisites at a community college as a post-bacc student. The MSAR lists specific course requirements at every medical school. The vast majority accept community college credits. You can buy the MSAR or check school's websites individually to be sure though. I wouldn't worry about community college classes being accepted.

I got in with 75% CC and was never asked about it. One state MD acceptance, OOS MD invite but didn't go, two DO acceptances from two interviews and many more invites I didn't go to. Regardless, don't let people psych you out to the point you don't leap. It is possible.

non-trad also.
I am just curious when I hear that people didn't go to the interview, if you don't find out until dec-feb, how did you know that you got accepted before turning down potential schools?
