I am a psychology major and will be graduating this summer. I will have all of my med school pre-reqs completed by the end of next term before taking the MCAT. However, I am concerned that when I apply to medical schools this upcoming June I won't have any upper level science courses and that will be frowned upon by the admissions committe. After graduating I was hoping to get a job and take one or two classes (human physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, neuroscience) each semester next year before I enroll in medical school of 2006. So does it really matter that I'm not a biology major and I don't have any upper level science courses?

I'm an occupational therapy major. I sent in 15 secondaries and got 12 interview invites...no upper level bio here...

Good luck with it.

I don't think it matters that you don't have any upper division science courses. But make sure that you fulfill reqs for all the schools u apply to. For instance, some school requires a biochemistry course as a pre-req. Aside frmom that, if u have time, take some upper div courses. Never hurts, unless you do horrible in them.

i'm an english major. i took the bare-minimum science requirements for most med schools and have interviews at 13 of 17 applied to. just do well and do what you like, and don't hang out with pre-meds.

I didn't notice people have 13 interviews....that is ridiculous. As far as your psych major, I personally think it is weak. But if you back it up witha good mcat then it doesn't matter. I know so many people who went that route and got nailed by the mcat...just make sure you know your ****...it doesn't have to be through a class.

If you go and ask the adcoms, they LIKE to see people with something other than biology degrees. The #1 accepted major? Music. Proportionately more music majors get into med school than any other major. The least accepted? Biology. Perhaps because there's more bio majors than anything else.

Bottom line: Do more than just bio bio bio bio bio. Do what you like. Do it well. Wow the adcoms with your application brilliance and you'll do fine.

i've just been slacking with updating my interviews on sdn, and you don't have to tell me how ridiculous 13 interviews is, both time-wise and financially...i thought maybe my story would be encouraging since my stats are a 30 and a 3.6 and i was an english major. i've found that my experiences with publishing various essays/short stories has come up in nearly all of secondaries and certainly in every interview i've had.

Ditto what you said, gotigers.

I've been asked about my work and my travels in all my interview - and never about what courses I didn't take. I do want to say that I feel the bio folks do have some degree (could be a little, could be a lot) of advantage over me, as they've taken cell bio and biochem and micro...that will pay off in spades in medical school, I'm guessing.
But I have not been hurt in any way, shape, or form by my choice of major.

This can be misleading.

Think of the total number of each major accepted.

Guess who comes in second....psych majors.

Relax.
