I was wondering how applicants are making their list of DO schools. I've made my own list of all DO schools, but unfortunately am not finding a reliable source for stats for each of the DO schools (the various ones I've found so far tend to contradict). Does anyone have any recommendations on where to start looking?

If you potentially have any specific recommendations, thought I'd include my stats: cGPA 3.44 (w/ postbacc), sGPA 3.30, MCAT 510 (retook, with initial score of 25 on old MCAT). My list so far is as follows, aiming for 15-20 schools.

AZCOM
LECOM - Bradenton
LECOM
NYIT COM
NSU COM
PNWU COM
PCOM
RVUCOM
TouroCOM-NY
TouroCOM-CA
TUNCOM
Western COMP
Western Lebanon (I've heard it's not recommended to apply to both COMPs...is this true?)

Thank you!

Good list: I suggest adding:

MUCOM
UNECOM
DMU
VCOM
CCOM
KCOM
KCU

AZCOM
LECOM - Bradenton
LECOM
NYIT COM
NSU COM
PNWU COM
PCOM
RVUCOM
TouroCOM-NY
TouroCOM-CA
TUNCOM
Western COMP
Western Lebanon

Thank you!

Thanks Goro. I'm gonna add those to the list. Is there anywhere I could check stats for different schools? I think I kind of compiled based on location preferences and from word of mouth, but I do want to make sure that I have a few schools that could be the closest I can have to back up schools (of course, nothing is ever for granted). Could I ask why you suggested those schools?

The stats for the COMs have been posted in this forum.

I would remove LECOM-B unless you're bent on PBL and PNWU unless you're from the PNW. I found them to be a waste of application and secondary money, but that might just be me. Might even get away with removing TUNCOM if money is tight.

Def add KCU, CCOM, DMU, Marion.

I think you're set for a lot of schools based on your stats! For reference, I had a 27 and 3.62 only applied to 13 schools and got 8 II's , 4 of which I went to before I was accepted to my number one, so I think you'll be cruising only applying to 15ish. Also, when I was at interviews I had people who had received II's to both COMPs, so I don't think applying to both would hurt your chances.

Okay, that's kind of what I was aiming for, somewhere around 15 DOs, 25 MDs. Just gotta iron out the list. And congrats on the acceptance, man!

I just had a few more questions (sorry, sorting through all this makes everything clear as mud):
- From what I've read, DO schools don't really have an OOS bias, besides PNWU? I'm from SoCal, so definitely no advantages here.
- Any particular method you had while picking schools? Just stats? I'm kinda guessing our LizzyM scores would be right about the same.
- Also w/ the IIs, based on your personal history, seems like they did screen. Would you say that's true?

Thanks for the help, super thankful to have the SDN community!

I'd say definitely add AT Still and Marian. I have similar stats (500 MCAT though) with good extracurriculars and was accepted to both. Also ATSU in Kirksville has the coolest osteopathic med museum in the world, so they're cooler than the other schools lol

Schools I would avoid applying to because of low OOS numbers: OSU, Ohio, MSU, PWNU (not so much state but regional preference to the NW). Rowan and UNECOM have regional preferences for the NE. The others are fine for OOS.

Note: if you are from CA I wouldn't waste so much money on MD schools. Your stats are pretty low for a CA applicant and are circling the drain. Maybe apply to like 10-15 MD and likewise for DO. Don't underestimate the drain of filling out and paying for secondaries

Nahhh you're good ask away! I was in your boat too forever ago haha I couldn't have made it through the process without SDN

Mmmmm OOS bias is present for PNWU for sure. Then I know Rowan, UNE, NYCOM and a few others have what seems like an (unspoken) regional bias. I met people from California who had interviews from MSUCOM, but I myself couldn't see myself forking out 80k for tuition.

I, too, am from SoCal so the big things for me were location (borders a body of water, big city, or mountains), stats, match lists that fit what I'm currently interested in. Shoot me a PM and I'll give you even more details and such.

I would be careful with the MDs too... just because of the screens they use. I know people with 30+ and 3.6+ that didn't get II's from schools they thought the should be getting them from.

I'm honestly probably going to end up applying to lower tier MD schools - I have about 15-20 on the list so far, with my only top tier being my alma mater. I do know that chances of DO schools are more reasonable.

I talked to an old mentor a while ago, and she told me with an improved MCAT, I might make be able to slip through some screens, but definitely applying with the understanding that my stats are low.

Noted. I'm also kinda hoping to end up reasonably close to home, but I'm open to anywhere that takes me, 80k tuition or otherwise (though I'd prefer not to end up in more debt than is reasonable). I'll definitely PM you soon! Thanks again!

Med museums are always a plus! Added. thanks jwilliams1993 😀

KCOM is also the only DO school that has an attached hospital (pretty sure this is accurate) so you get an amazing atmosphere of medical education you don't get with other DO schools or even some MD schools. Not to mention the amazing facilities, enormous alumni network, nearly unmatched named recognition (1st school), and strong curriculum. Only reason it's not the most sought after school is because it's in a 20k population city in Missouri.

The other schools I've heard nothing but great things about: DMU, CCOM, KCU (after their criminal dean left), PCOM, MSU, OUHCOM

Stay away from LECOM. Did the 100s of threads about that place not deter you? lol

OSU has their own teaching hospital.

Attached to the med school?

I believe so

Edit: Cubs I might be wrong. I thought I read that on their website but Now that I think more about it I'm not so sure

Then I guess OSU and KCOM. For some reason I thought OSU had the school a few blocks from the hospital.

I'm scratching LECOM-B from the list, don't think I'm down for the PBL. As far as Erie, I'm trying to really consider my options. I saw that there's a strict dress code, which I don't mind to be honest. However, if what I've read about how unhelpful they are with residencies, that's a lot more worrisome. I know I'm going to want a lot of support wherever I go. I'll definitely be looking more into that though. Thanks for the heads up!

Definitely looking into the list, and tentatively added to the list, thank you 😀

Dress code shouldn't be an issue. We are professionals and adults. The issue with LECOM like you said is the clinical rotations and more the attitude of the administration as being overall not supportive.

Know that OSU has to take 90% in state so if you aren't from OK then it is most likely just throwing away some cash monies. If it is your biggest desire ever to go there then apply but don't hold your breath

One thing to note about OUHCOM is the contract they have you sign that makes you commit 5 years to Ohio post residency. I was all about this school and then I learned about the contract and then was like nopeeeee lol nothing against Ohio... it's just not a place I see myself living in my 30s

I think that's why I originally left OSU off my list, haha. Thanks for the heads up!
