I interviewed at several great programs and was wondering for some input. What are peoples views on UPMC - Pittsburgh vs Cleveland Clinic? It seems like they are both strong programs, both have fully integrative EMR systems, and both have great fellowship matches.

Also.. any suggestions about MUSC, University of Maryland, or VCU.

U Maryland seemed like a very solid program when I went to visit it as a medical student. I've heard that their EMG is pretty tough though.

Don't know much about the others, except that Cleveland Clinic has a superb epilepsy program. I believe they have the largest volume of epileptic surgery cases in the country.

I have no idea of the US News rankings these days but I remember thinking of Cleveland Clinic and UPMC as roughly even in terms of the programs' quality, though CC always struck me much more as the 800lb gorilla in the neurology world. They just have gigantic size and resources. You'll get fine training and great fellowship opportunities and research opportunities at both. But I suspect you already knew this.

As a city, I would definitely say Pittsburgh >>> Cleveland.

I'm not sure about the others on your list.

UPMC has a fantastic stroke research program, particularly in intervention, where they are essentially second to none. They have a great neuro-trauma unit as well, although up until now they haven't had any neuro-trained critical care physicians (recruiting 2 this year, I think).

Cleveland Clinic is very well-rounded, and a great place to get your residency training, as you will have the chance to do pretty much anything you want for fellowship coming from there. But it is in Cleveland. The Indians are pretty good, I guess, and the Browns are there, which is OK, although the original Browns are now in Baltimore. It is also close to Canton.

Maryland is great for stroke, particularly epidemiology. Brackie Mitchell is there, and he is a pretty legendary stroke epidemiologist. Lots of other very good and personable stroke faculty as well. Don't know too much about their other neuro divisions, but that's just because I'm so narrowly focused.
