So my school has mandatory attendance and I am wondering, for those of you that have this, how do you find time to study? Do you use earbuds in lecture? I wanna follow the advice of my SDN forefathers (you guys) and study enough to stay in the top 50% of my class, but then use the other time to study from board prep material (Zanki, B&B, Pathoma, Sketchy, FA).

So I am wondering what your study/class schedule is like for those of you that have this unfortunate school policy. Do you find enough time in the day???

Oh.

That sucks.

Choose a different school bro.

If you can't, just study in the back with earbuds.

Can't imagine that hell of required attendance.

Are you an incoming first year?

If so, for the first test block try out the whole being engaged in class thing. Look over the slides the night before (max 5 min per lecture hour). Listen and ask questions (after lecture, don't be that jerk that delays class asking nonsense questions every hour).

If you are scoring below the average then go for the whole ear buds in the back of class thing. Sitting in the middle of the row is great because you won't get distracted when anyone walks past your aisle. Plus you won't feel awkward when the professor walks past you and realizes you don't even have his slides on your desktop. Always fun when the professor is talking about biochem and you are starting at histo slides.

What penal colony is this??? There's plenty of data showing there are better ways to learn

My school does the same thing. They have mandatory attendance lectures at times during the spring semester of second year when we're all freaking out about boards. The sad thing is this is one of the lesser problems as I so brilliantly laid out in the past.

Any recommendations? haha I dont want to get sucked up in ONLY reviewing the school curriculum/resources and hope I have time to use board prep materials.

Not going to lie, I spent my entire 3rd year less dressed up than your class spends their first and second.

I guess at the very least the program does have decent performance and has invested money in residencies and local healthcare.

Headphones. If you want to make it less obvious, wear hoodies. Of course that won't work during summertime...

Sit in the back where they wont' see you.

Agreed 100% but do you know where the data is? Having trouble finding it on google.

No paper explicitly states that skipping class is more conducive to learning.

I'm pretty confident that during my interview at CU some of the current students said they wish they did not have to attend all lectures, but that it was not such a big issue since they were permitted to sit in the back of the classroom with earbuds. I might be wrong, but the way they presented it was as though wearing earbuds was allowed while in lecture. Regardless, the program has produced some stellar results so I'll trust what the faculty and current students recommend.

Hey, I go to a required lecture school, so I can tell you what I do.

Depends on the day, but I either actually listen to the lecture (if its a good lecturer or subject I'm very interested in), do the earbuds and 2x speed on other lectures (or sometimes pathoma/sketchy/BB), work on my research (write papers, research literature, etc). I have found I have a hard time reviewing old lectures/flashcards or whatever in class because I get distracted by the lecturer talking, and I'm not one of those people who listens to music while studying.

For M2, I'm planning to sit farther in the back so I can do earbuds and listen to other stuff more often (this year I felt too close to the front to do it all the time. Some profs care, some don't)

However, since you are gonna be an M1, I suggest just going to class and trying the lecture thing at first, see how it goes. I remember being an incoming M1 and reading all the stuff people do on here, then trying it out and not understanding how you could possibly learn anything from 2x speed lectures, not understanding how anyone finds time for extra resources, etc. Weirdly enough at first I found my time best spent actually paying attention in lecture. Now I love 2x speed and having a greater percentage of time learning coming from outside sources. You eventually learn what you need from lectures (and develop an ear from someone speaking double fast) and I know what I need to get from the lectures to pass tests and have plenty of time to add in board resources.

If you are like most people, its gonna take at least a few months to get your study methods/style down. Just work hard and keep tweaking what you are doing until you find your rhythm. Also, people have different opinions on this, so you do you, but I wouldn't go too crazy with extra board resources at first. Don't try to review/learn stuff in them until you're going over that same info in class. Do use them alongside classes if you have time. I felt like I didn't at first, but then found that if I cut out a pass of lecture material and then used that time on pathoma, sketchy, etc instead my grades didn't drop and I probably learned better.

Pretty sure I learned everything I needed to know about medicine from youtube. Thanks dr. Dusty!
