If we had a mandatory attendance policy, it's quite possible I would have dropped out of school by now.

At SMU, in the Cayman Islands, we have a mandatory attendance policy that is strictly enforced...I mean, we are learning medicine, so I think I'm in medical school...Perhaps I'm actually back in Junior High just taking real advanced classes.
+pissed+

Some of the lectures here are mandatory. Usually these are clinically related stuff that people are tempted to blow off. There is a sign in sheet for these... I don't exactly know what the repurcussions of non-attendance are, but perhaps I will find out since I skipped today's mandatory session.

My school tried that, but it was soon overturned due to threat of a riot

So now they just make us sign in for most afternoon activities/labs. They make it part of the grade so if you don't go you'll fail. 😡 Sneaky.

Of course we can miss morning lectures to sleep in, so it's not TOO bad. 😛

I personally think 3rd yr attendance should also be optional ):

Wow! I'm in second year. Other than exams, I don't think I've been to class in the last month. We have a small group thing that is required, but lecutre. Come on. Most of the stuff you can learn on your own if you are motivated. People have different learning styles, by requiring people to go to lecture, you will be hurting those who are better off learning the material on their own without helping those who would go to lecture anyway.

We are not in kindergarten anymore, things that don't involve patient contact should be optional provided that the student understands that they are still responsible for the material.

Couldn't agree more even if agreed more...

DAVID GEFFEN School of Medicine at ucla... lecture isn't mandatory but labs/pbl are.. they want to make sure the new curriculum is working.

Regular everyday lectures at my school are not mandatory, but any and all clinics, clinical correlations, and small group meetings certainly are. If we miss one of these, we get a negative evaluation in our file; if we miss two, we fail the course. Kinda rough, but we don't have more than one a week at the most.

I attended class for the first three weeks of medical school my first year, and then stopped going for the rest of the year. Once second year began, and we started learning about symptoms, disease, medications, etc., I began attending again. To me, it's all about the relevance.
