I just want to know if there are any Maryland students receiving the Health Professions Loan (10,000) or the Perkins Loan (8,000) this year. I will be attending this coming year and I guess I expected to receive some of that money, which would total about 18,000 for this year in low interest subsidized money. I understand that you must have a very high financial need for these loans but I guess I thought I would have a high need since I filed as an independent and had essentially nothing to contribute towards my education. Is there something else besides need that goes into determining whether or not you can get these loans?

Yeah, you have to submit your parent's tax info as well, even if you are classified independent. I've been married for almost three years and have a bachelors, but still had to submit my parent's info.

I'm a 3rd year student, am an independent and have no outside sources for funding (my parents are not wealthy either!) and did not receive the health professions or perkins. my package looks something like this for 2009-2010:

stafford @ 6.8%: $40000
grad plus @ 8.5%: $44000
😱

sucks to be you....

to answer the OP, the school only has so much money of those loans to pass out and they dish it out to those in most need and i believe that upperclassman get consideration over lower classman. sometimes as the semester goes on some more aid might pop up but dont count on it

My aid package for Maryland is pretty much the same as Hup's
$40K Stafford
$48K Grad Plus

Will we be able to consolidate at a lower rate in the future? This is CRAZY!

As I understood it, even though your parents information was included it was not considered when determining the eligibility for the loan. Your parents' information just had to be included to be eligible for the Health Professions loan. I was disappointed with my award but I guess there is not much for me to do about except to be happy I am going in the first place. Thanks for the replies.
