Maryland Interview?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i had mine in january... it was laid back for the most part... first you are in a room with the other 8 or so applicants... they give you 15 minutes to write about something... i think ours was write about a big decision you have made that if given the same choice, you would definitely make the same decision, or something like that... then you are given a schedule.... i was first interviewed by two current students... it was laid back and they were very helpful... then i got a tour of the school... the next part was not so fun... they bring all 8 applicants together, along with a faculty member and two students... then they ask questions and we had to answer one by one... questions like, what seperates you from the rest of the applicant pool... in other words, how are you better than the people in this room... that was strange and the only part that got me to stumble... then i spent a half hour with a faculty member... that too was laid back... just basic why questions and one or two ethics questions...

overall it was not that bad... it was the only school i applied to and i was accepted... actually they put me on hold for a month, then i was accepted (i think they wanted my new pcat scores)

anyway, i hope that helps and good luck!

Do you know if the school is impacted for instate students?

Also was the interview blind or did they have your transcripts?

Did it really take 4-5 hours for the whole thing?

How is the area around Maryland? I'm going to fly from Cali so I don't know the conditions in Baltimore right now.

Hi riskhk,

I interviewed with UMB last year. This was how mine went:

15-20 mins: Writing sample.
Who do you think should be added to the faces on Mt. Rushmore?

15-20 mins: Group Discussion w/1 faculty & pharm students

15-20 mins: Interview 1-on-1 with pharm student.
Pretty laid back. Conversational format mostly.

15-20 mins: Interview with one faculty member.
More formal. I can't remember if he had my application in front of him. He posed lots of questions about the profession and my ideas of it, how I would contribute, where pharmacy is going, etc.

Following the interview - there are pharm students milling around in the lobby to answer any questions.

So -- the interview session can last a few hours.

If I remember correctly, the faculty person I interviewed with said they did not give preferential admission to in-state residents.

Conditions in Baltimore
I was not imressed by the area surrounding UMB. I got a sense that the area was a bit rough. I'm from cali too -- and being from such a culturally diverse area - I also didn't expect to be culture-shocked in Baltimore.

The campus is nice. Med & Dental schools are right across the street from the Pharm school - so it's a collegiate atmosphere.

Hope all goes well for you!!

Faculty members do have our applications in front during interviews. When I was interviewing with my faculty member, I saw him take 2-page report of some sort, reading it and then proceeded to ask me about my activities. I think it's a summary of our accomplishments.

The students, I don't think they knew our application. I was asked a lot of ethical questions.

University of Maryland Pharmacy School
I really, really love their Pharmacy School. The Pharmacy school is so lively. When I entered the Pharmacy Lounge, I saw students jumping up and down laughing and grinning. I was told that once you're enrolled at the school, the professors will know your name even if you sit in the back!

I don't like the area where the professional schools are though. It looks very dangerous, and I wouldn't walk by myself after 6:00. Though, the inner harbor is very nice and safe.

As Nos mentioned, the other professional schools are near each other. They're like a 5 second walk away. They also have a really nice library.
