which school do uthink has a better reputation/is a better school - maryland or nyu???

i CANNOT decide which school i want to go to!!

by the way, i am an in-state Maryland resident. So, maryland would be like 200,000 dollars cheaper....but is nyu a better dental school???

id REALLY appreciate any feedback whatsoever!

maryland's better! (i think..haha i dont know much about nyu but i personally would prefer a smaller class size and cheaper tuition)

You would have to be INSANE to go to NYU over Maryland! If I hadn't gotten in to a school this close to home, I would definitely be going to Maryland. Great school, ridiculous facilities....wait, is this a joke?!😱

200k difference? hmmmm.... hard question :scared:

I am in the same boat. I live in maryland and have gotten into UMD and NYU. The difference in tuition, fees, housing, cost of living really add up in New York, although it seemed like a great school and NY is the best city. I'd guess about $160,000-200,000 in savings over 4 years and possibly more if tuition goes up. Maryland is a great school, Baltimore not as nice of a city. It would be great to live close to home and be close to my family and friends. Unless something changes, I sort have already made my decision..still awaiting a response from my NOVA interview.

are you out of your mind? nyu doesnt compare to maryland in terms of reputation.

I would def choose maryland over nyu, but what about maryland vs. Columbia. I cant make up my mind 🙁(((. I love Columbia better but Maryland would be 100K cheaper for me. Can just someone decide for me 😕

i thought you were set on columbia? your signature infers that you like columbia a lot...

I'll probably end up choosing a school that's about 120 grand more expensive. For me, four years is a long time (even longer if I specialize) and I want to go where I know I'll enjoy myself the most.

Isn't your time more valuable than money anyways. Go where you'll be happiest.

i appreciate the feedback!

i know it seems like a no-brainer to some, but i REALLY REALLY liked nyu and i have been in maryland my entire life. And although the facilities are state-of-the-art, so are NYU's, and i am NOT a huge fan of baltimore.

also, when I visited, I got the impression that students dont really receive much clinical experience as other city schools, such as NYU. Was it just a bad time/bad day or did others get that same feeling?

and one last question, how are u guys figuring that maryland is better than nyu?? are these just assumptions, because I have yet to find any rankings?

... For me, four years is a long time (even longer if I specialize) ..

You most likely will not end up at the same school if you specialize. so dont think that if you go to columbia you will be in NYC for 6-8 years..

OP, cost aside I would choose NYU. However, cost IS a factor and it really depends what you want to do. I don't know which school is better clinically but NYU is teriffic. However, if you are planning on specializing, your undergrad dental education matters very little compared to where you do your residency. So if specialization is your ultimate goal, I would choose Maryland because it's so much cheaper. But pick where you think you'll be happy. If you choose NYU I promise we'll have a grand old time!

during the last year i lived in baltimore, two of my friends were murdered.

never living in baltimore = priceless

I am almost in the same boat well b/w case and nyu:

I am leaning toward nyu since there are no disgusting anatomy dissections and also the patient pool is ridiculously large so if you do more treatments you will actually get paid by the school.

Hope that helps

 god i hope you're joking.

Please tell me why I would be joking if I truly hate opening dead people's guts. Besides it is the experience of living in NYC and the patient pool as I said is so large that you'll probably see the weirdest dental diseases on this planet. What especial classes does Case have that NYU doesn't? Is there something taught at Case that is so unique that NYU hasn't even heard of?

People should stop stereotyping without having knowledge. At first everybody said that NYU has a high attrition rate which could not be any farther from the truth. The attrition rate at NYU is 3% which is lower than the national average.

Oh and one little thing that might change your way of thinking:

NYU is the fifth on NIH rankings of research budget allocations and I believe this ranking is more prestigous than U.S. news since it's done by our government but whatever predental students probably know more and if they say that NYU is crap then it should be right?

everyone needs to stop bashing NYU and maryland. these are both very reputable schools. each has their pro's and con's. i think everyone can agree that the pro's for maryland are cost and quality of education and the con is baltimore. the pro's for NYU are nyc and quality of education and the con is cost.

if cost if of no importance to you, then by all means goto NYU. if you'd rather have (a lot) less debt, choose maryland. i think that is basically what it comes down to.

jb!🙂

I actually loved Baltimore (and the school)....does that mean I am ghetto?

Well, we had 1 gross anatomy lab so far, which is pretty disappointing.

And yeah, Maryland.

maryland, man. nyu is a great school, and id really be having a tough time deciding b/w the two, as well. But, maryland seems to be the obvious winner🙂
