Maryland: Time from interview to decision

Can any UMD interviewees give some insight into the average time from interview to decision/acceptance?

They told us they would try to take only about 3 weeks this year, instead of the usual 6-8 weeks.

I thought they said 4 weeks or something like that. I think the AdCom is meeting Nov 18 and Nov 23... so hopefully people who interviewed late October and early November will hear news soon!

I interviewed (as an out of stater) on October 19th. Acceptance letter was postmarked October 28. So nine days. Hopefully everyone elses comes that quick.

Wow. UMD is quick. The AdCom met Oct 25... so it only takes them 3 days to get back to you 🙂 Sweet 🙂

those are the dates. i think the adcom meets only to discuss interviewees. those selected for an interview are screened by dean foxwell and members of the admissions office. good luck folks.

Yea, I did. They told me to check online. I have to say, those ppl that answered the phone for UMD are not so friendly. When I called, I told the person that I have been completed for over 3 monthes now and wonder if I could check my status, and she said "so is thousand other applicants." 😱 Haha, maybe she was having a bad day. I am afraid to call UMD now. The Record Office mistakenly listed me as an out-state, and after I petitioned, they finally listed me as an in-state. I was wondering if there anyway to check if they listed me as an in-state or out-state in the adcom office without calling the office? I don't want to be annoying and have them throw my application away, haha. Thanks everyone. 👍

You probably will have to go through the Admissions Office again, but when you call, ask a pointed question such as: "There was some confusion with Records & Registration over my in-state status - now that it has been resolved, I just wanted to make sure that my in-state status has been noted on my file." They shouldn't give you a hard time about this, and if they do, hey, at least you have your question answered and you can stop worrying. I found the admissions staff very friendly when I interviewed, but I'm sure they do get A LOT of 'status check' calls, so maybe you just caught them at a bad time. Good luck.

I'm sure that someone must have asked this question somewhere else, but I just don't seem to be able to find it... So here it goes. How long did you guys have to wait between the time you were complete and the time you got the interview invite? Sorry if it's annoying, but UMD is my first choice and I'm very anxious about my app. 🙂 Also, did you get the invite through email or snail mail or phone? Thanks a lot!

I didn't hear from them as quickly as starfruit. I was complete beginning of September and didn't receive and interview invite until the second week of October. Although as you can see from this thread, I suck with dates But I know it definietly took longer than 10 days. It was more like a month.

nervous premed... i wouldn't worry too much yet. keep in mind that maryland hasn't been interviewing all that long. and if you are a maryland resident, you should get an interview. there is no set date you will receive an interview after you are complete. some people will be interviewed before others who were complete on the same date. let's face the facts... a lot of qualified applicants apply to maryland. they can only do so many interviews in a given time - this means that the all-stars get interviewed first, just like any other school. just hold on true guys. it is still very early in the season. peace.

Nah, I haven't heard anything yet. I am praying every night, this waiting sucks. I might call them early December if I dont' heard anything by then. I just hope that all you guys that got an interview from UMD are a much better applicant than I am, and they are intrviewing the best applicant first. If you guys don't mind, can you guys PM me your MCAT and GPA, so I know if I still have a chance. Thanks 👍 Also, I am rooting for Tinkerbelle too. 😀

Good luck, gobbelty_gook! The interview day at UMD is very low stress, and really a lot of fun. Everyone I met there, including students and staff, was very friendly and seemed to give honest assessments of the school. Also, the facilities and curriculum are awesome (granted, UMD was my first and, until January, only, interview experience, so I have nothing to compare it to..., but I was impressed). You'll do great! Let us know how it goes... 🙂

first of all, i must say that your log in name is perfect for you
but seriously, don't worry! i think you already probably have a good idea whether or not your scores are competitive. i think the average GPA for Maryland is around 3.6 and average MCAT is around a 29. And if you are a state resident, you could probably even lower those a bit!
So if you think about it, obviously there are lots of people with better stats than those averages and those kids are going to get interviews first (i had interview/got accepted and my stats are higher than those). if your stats are closer to the averages or a little below, then its probably just going to take a little longer, but don't give up!
i bet i'll see you in classes next year!

My app was complete by the end of august, interviewed on 10/25, received acceptance on 11/19. My stats are 3.4 gpa and 39 mcat if that helps.

Cost is definitely an issue, because I have trouble justifying paying twice as much for a comparable education at an out-of-state school. I also have friends in the area and I have always liked Baltimore, but this was not a major factor in my decision. I know several students at umd and they all have very positive things to say about the school, plus I like how the classes are usuallly over by noon every day. There is a general notion that both the students and teachers are very friendly and helpful - I think everyone who has visited the school for interviews also got this impression. Overall, I have never heard anything negative about the school besides the fact that some of the facilities are showing their age. It seems that the school is addressing these issues however, and wants to make a genuine effort to satisfy its students.

I'm pretty sure i'll go to maryland. It's an awesome school. But I won't decide until I see the financial aid package for the other schools I was accepted to. I keep hoping I'll get a scholarship somewhere and won't have to take out a gazillion dollars in loans UMd will probably cost me half as much as the other schools though... which is one of the main reasons I would go there.

Oh, I also liked how the students take tests on thier laptops and i think i heard that lectures are videotaped. Plus, the shock trauma center is awesome. UMD students also spend the shortest amount of time compared to other schools. A lot of schools are in clas from 9-5. But at Maryland, you are only in class from 8-12.
