Does Massey have a 4 year program or only a 5 year program?

4.5 according to VMSAR. You go in for your Veterinary degree program in mid-july. But come to the dark side. ;D Come to Murdoch. Also according to the VMSAR its 43,500NZ per year which comes to about 31537.50 dollars per year. Not bad. But I like sunny weather. ;D!
Also if you arent directly accepted it looks like you go into the first semester if you place out of it you go to the second semester with the vet program. Only 24 international seats are given each year.

Massey has a 5 year program but you can be accepted into semester 2 which makes the program 4.5 years long. I just got my acceptance into semester 2 at Massey 😀 Anyone else receive some good news?

As long as there's a thread for Massey already, I guess I won't start a new one.

Basically I got accepted (YAY!) but they ask for a nonrefundable deposit of $5000 NZ (?!?!) which comes out to somewhat over $3500 US. That's... kind of a lot of money. I'm waiting to hear back from my Tufts interview yesterday, but that might not be till mid-February. But the e-mail Massey sent says "Offers have been sent to all applicants in this select group of students, which slightly exceeds the number of places available." and keeps stressing that we should send in the acceptance + money quickly or else all the slots might be gone.

What do I do?? I was going to wait at least till the end of the week in case Tufts does the notify-early thing, but after that... do I plonk down $3500 anyway, just in case? Ugh... this whole thing sounds so predatory...

I am not sure what you should do, but i imagine a lot of people are in the same boat as you. I'm not certain it's predatory....doesn't Massey start in February? Or did you get accepted into second semester? Pretty sure you would have to make a decsion to go now and forego Tufts if you were to start in Feb?

Someone correct me if i am mistaken.

Congrats though!

Oh yeah, I applied for second semester so I would be starting in the fall instead. (Kind of important information! Sorry ^^;; and thanks for the congratulations 🙂 ) The final deadline to respond, for me, is April 1, 2010. I'm just kinda insecure and worried that all the spots will quickly be filled, and sort of counting on the holiday season to delay people for a couple more weeks while I gnaw on these thoughts for a while.

If its anything like the Australian schools which Im pretty sure on the same schedule, then yes in order to save your space you would have to pay for that. Also you probably would have to go on, if you were accepted for February. Read your offer letter carefully. You may have been accepted into the second semester like most and thus will not need to jump the gun just yet. Where Im going they have structured the Veterinary Program to suit more graduate students or at least people with university study under their belt. Massey is more the british model. =D; Lots of school leavers and youngins running around.

So Massey requires you to have taken molec/cell bio, organismal/animal bio, gen chem and orgo chem, and a year of physics. What do the bioloigy courses equate to for courses we would take here in America? Obviously the chems and physics seem the same but what about organismal/animal bio would this just be like general bio II? Also molec/cell bio would that be like gen bio I or actually just a molec and cell bio course?

I just got an email from Massey telling me I had been accepted, I only need to send in a form stating that I haven't been convicted of anything that would prevent me from being a vet (ie, professional misconduct). Don't know about dropping a deposit. Thanks for the heads-up.
I applied for 2nd semester, direct entry.

I just got into Massey 2nd Sem as well. Naturally the other school i'd really like to hear from (ie davis) doesnt do interview invites until mid february and acceptances are sent out late march. Right now i am trying o figure out if I should sink the 3500 dollars on a deposit to save my place. Wait till Feb to see if i have an interview or wait until i hear back from Davis entirely and risk loosing my place. I may just email their international office and ask for advice: see what the risk of loosing a spot etc is. If i do i will be ure to post the response.

I also may talk to a few international massey students on here and see if they reget their choice or would do it again.

Scary that i may be in New Zealand by July.

Also as a heads up: pets need a rabies titer 6 mo before moving to NZ and will need a few weeks (3 i think) of quarantine upon arrival unless they are coming from hawaii

Congrats to fellow acceptees! 😀

I labeled them "predatory" (which was too strong a word, really) because 1. the humongous deposit and 2. letting people know way ahead of most other schools and 3. telling people that space is limited, buy in soon or lose your place! But I guess they're just trying to sort out the people who really want to go from the iffy ones, since they don't have interviews to do so... and it's apparently working pretty well XD

Alabastertree, I got an e-mail with at least half a dozen forms attached to it... but I'm in America (and a couple of the forms were for American financial aid). Do you live somewhere else (like, say, New Zealand? XD) They might have a different policy for people in different countries...

Um...no offense but you shouldn't label schools like that before understanding the culture. Its rude. They ask for the deposit and they ask for a quicker time for the reason that they start at a different time. Dont go around and assuming that all schools are like American schools because its a big world out there. A comment like that shows you didn't do your homework before hand. And just so there isnt any discrepancies I am american.

Yeah, I admit I was wrong to say that... I was panicking and starting to think the worst of people. 🙁 Sorry!

I'm in the US-part of my app was missing, they wanted me to send it again. Was in Cali- I feel your pain about Davis. I sent that form in a few days ago ($53 to mail a piece of paper, I've never been more appreciative of email), so hopefully I'll get the rest of the paperwork soon. I'm excited!
Is anyone else coming with a significant other? I'm a little concerned about my bf finding a job... NZ's immigration website is a bit scary.

Alabastertree- the website's a bit scary, and things move kinda slow down there, but the people at the NZ consulate, and at immigration are super helpful and super friendly. If your partner has a useful skill, something they've got a shortage of (and they have lists of both long and short term critical shortage jobs), you should have no problem getting them over- eventually.

Also the people at the international student office at Massey should be able to help you with some of that stuff- I'm sure by now they've heard just about everything from us wacky americans. oh- and skype is your friend for calling overseas. So, soooo your friend. And watch the timezones.

Good luck, maybe future temporary antipodeans.

Your BF finding a job is a legitimate concern. Of the Americans who have brought partners over, that's been quite a challenge. Palmerston North really does not have a diverse economic base AT ALL. Your biggest problem may not be immigration, but him finding a way for him to support himself for 4.5 years in Palmerston North -- or even Wellington (two hours away).

There are a few North Americans in my class who have left their OH's at home while studying at Massey. They just go home pretty much immediately at every opportunity.
