Someone on the surgery forum posted about proper etiquette on Match Day in terms of contacting your program to say "thank you." I have never heard anything of the sort before. Are we expected or encouraged to call the program at which we matched on Thursday to say thank you? Also, they said surgery programs often call their matched people to say congrats on thursday? Any peds residents have experiences with these things?

Havent heard much about this either, but my guess is I won't be answering any calls on my cell while I'm at the bar watching the first round of NCAA's tomorrow. Let Match Madness begin

When my husband matched, several years ago, the program director called him soon after. I'm not especially planning on calling my new PD tomorrow ... I expect that we'll all have a lot more contact with our program administrators than with anyone else in our new programs over the next few months. Good luck tomorrow!

good to know someone else is planning to spend the next four days at the bar

4 days!? The tournament is 4 weeks...and we don't start for almost 4 months! Who's stopping at 4 days? 🙂

Iserson recommends doing this, regardless of specialty. Common sense supports this, too. 😉

The program director where I matched last year called me a couple of hours after the match ceremony was over. I think that most programs will contact you, I don't think it necessarily has to go the other way around. Take Tappat's advice, you'll have lots of time to thank your PD in the coming months. Plus, it's not like they can take away your match just for not thanking them tomorrow. Finally, I'm really happy I wasn't expected to call, Match Day last year was on St. Patrick's Day AND it was the first day of the NCAA Tournament, getting in touch with the program was the last thing I was going to do on that day!
