Are most AMGs able to match into a decent anesthesia program with an average step 1 score? I know there's been other threads on this but I'd appreciate if people who had a similar step 1 could tell me about their match experience.

Here is "Charting the Outcomes" for 2011. Locate the anesthesiology section (use table of contents). There is a chart for "US seniors" in each specialty concerning Step 1, and a lot of other criteria as well. There are also many other specialties in this report.

While helpful, I think that he is asking for advice from residents and attendings who have been through this process.

I am curious as well. Would a score of say 235 preclude anyone from any programs?

Yes I've seen the charting outcomes and I know with a 228 I'm most likely going to match somewhere but I'd like to know my chances as a whole. Will I be competitive at many programs or just a few of the lower tier programs?

Awesome point of clarification. People know what is there, but the best comes from those who are where you want to be, otherwise there would be no forums like this one, or no mentors. Good luck in the process.

I think the best way to go about this would be to contact ppl that matched from your school last year.

235 should get your foot in the door of most programs. Keep in mind that a step 1 score is not the end all for getting interviews.

Really, step 1 and 2 scores serve as a cut off for interviews. Once at the interview, the score matters a whole lot less. I had a 232 and a 234 on steps 1 and 2 respectively, applied to 27 interviews (from a program with a strong anesthesia program) and got 24 interviews. Only three that didn't interview me were MGH and B&W (I did interview at BIDMC) and Einstein (strangely weird given my invites from cornell, columbia, nyc, etc). Otherwise, I got interviews everywhere else I applied to include the top NYC programs and every other program I wanted from south(Wake, Duke, Vandy, UAB) and abroad (WashU, hopkins, etc).

Step scores are not the end all be all, they just start the conversation.

It really is about the total package. The scores matter for getting interviews. Just work on the rest of your application. You would not believe how much your letters of recommendation and the actual interview (though usually low stress) matters. Programs want people they WANT to work with for four years.

I didn't know if you had seen charting the outcomes. Either way, I am in school like yourself. That is all I had to offer because I am asking the same question as well. Some stated earlier about asking the residents at your home program; I have done that and found it helpful. I hope you find what you're seeking.

If you improve dramatically on Step 2 (i.e. 20points), you could match at a "top" program. What will help even more is doing well on an away rotation at a program in which you hope to Match.

When it comes to matching into residency, the interview is king!
