Math Sucks!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Agreed. Hate math. I am not terrible at it in scientific courses, but calculus etc I hated. I also did terribly on the quantitative section of the GRE and its making me super nervous that it is going to affect my applications 🙁

Add me to the list. Math sucks! I actually enjoyed the repetiveness and challenge of lower level algebra and geometry but absolutely deplored trig and calc. Got a 150 on the quant sooooooo yeaaaah. 😀

you will use math *every day* you are a veterinarian. Need to figure out a dose of medication? Math.

Need to figure out a fluid rate? math.

Even in pathology you're comparing measurements of weight, length, etc.

sure you can use cheat sheets, but your job becomes easier when math becomes more second nature.

so instead of hating it, try to figure out a way that it makes more sense to you. the easier it is now, the easier it will be later.

Yeah not all Math I hate, It's the Precalculus I'm trying to overcome. I'm retaking it for the second time. After that I will advance to Calculus. I only have to take Calculus 1 and then I'm finish with Math, oh and plus Statistics

Meh, I don't know that disliking higher level maths is really that much of a problem as a vet.

I know, personally, I'm fine at math until I can't make the abstract concepts into something concrete... calc was rough, but calculating drug doses and fluids and comparisons/whatnot is pretty straightforward. I'm quite good at mental basic math, but still double check everything anyway with a calculator because I'm paranoid.

no, you don't need to get pre-calc to be a vet. but statistics is pretty important.

But I need it to get to Calculus, and I need Calculus to take my Chemistry classes which are the prerequisites

Agreed. I feel like there's always been a split here on SDN between half the people saying statistics is worthless and the other half saying it's super useful (I'm in the latter camp).

My personal opinion is that you can't do modern western medicine well without at least a basic understanding of statistics. You can't evaluate new information without statistics, since it is virtually all dependent on statistical analysis. If you don't understand that, you have no way to say "is this a decent study or not" .... and then you might as well just go with "well, I liked the way they worded their conclusion, so I'm going to roll with it."

Math, science and medicine all go hand in hand. Try not to go into a new class hating it just because it's math. Statistics is quite different from precalc/calc. You might like it. Plus, it's extremely useful.
