For the following statement to be true which of the variables can not be zero? 24x2(y-z)[(9+b)]a = 13.
A. x

B. y

C. z

D. a

E. b

anyone can explain?
 
It looks to me like "a" cannot be zero.

When you follow PEMDAS for the order of operations, the last operation would be the multiplication of the number * "a", and if "a" were zero, the expression would be equal to zero, which is certainly not 13!

Hope this helps! Math whizzes please correct me if I am wrong.

Well, I think this problem is wrong, because there are two right answers, it could be either x or a.
 
I would go with answer choice D. Is the "x" a multiplication sign or variable?
 
I will take "a" as my answer. However, "x" could also be a right answer. Therefore, "x" and "a" cannot be zero.
 
Forget order of operation... the whole problem is one big giant multiplication.

If you multipy ANYTHING by zero you get zero. If x or a is zero then your answer is automatically zero.

answer = x and a
 
Maybe he meant X to be an exponent?
(24x)2(y-z)[(9+b)]a = 13
or 24^x2(y-z)[(9+b)]a = 13
or even (24)x2(y-z)[(9+b)]a = 13
but it doesnt quite make sense looking like his original equation seeing 24x2 when it could have been written 48x(...)
